THE GAME IS OVER

Photo by Edmond Dantu00e8s on Pexels.com

It is hard to stop this rush toward self-destruction

by a nation so far ahead in the race

no one else could compete and play.

There is no reason to mourn the last mile run

in a race no longer any fun

for any but a very few,

and fewer still each day in play.

We all know American’s greatest sin

is loving nothing better than a game they can win.

When winning is no longer fun

we look for someone to blame, and make them pay

for reminding us the game is over

and a new game must be put in play.

And, so, we blamed Joe,

who simply, in so many ways, happened to be

the last leader to toss away the final play.

No one has been a winner since,

nor could be since that final day.

A new game cannot be worth our while

if the top few are the only winners.

The old game with so many losers may be over.

But, we Americans are not over the need to play

a game we all can win,

a game we call Election Day.

Let the new game begin!

DEFAMATION

Words can cut too close to the bone.

Words’ outside meaning fires the skin.

Words’ inside meaning, hidden from view

fires up hateful spew, just as true.

Words can cut too close to the bone.

splitting back the skin of what we have known.

Words open gaps to see within

what we have long hidden beneath our thin skins.

Words can make the blood flow strong,

too hard and too fast for too long.

Words flow beneath the marrow

to the depths of what we think we know.

Words pulse with their own beat

dancing through bodies to the soles of our feet.

Words leave bloody footprints to follow

until all blood is lost and our souls become hollow.

This is how words kill.

From outside in then out again

opening wounds we did not know

had crusted over wounds from long ago.

Words tear scars opening wounds anew

while ripping apart the peace we had found

to cure and to heal hate with love.

Words tell us love can never be true.

Words tell us love is not real;

if real, then, love is too weak to abide.

Words help us bury love so deep it subsides

and only hate can hold court inside.

Words boost false pride

that I am better than you.

I die inside as I try to kill the few

who speak the truth you once knew.

LADY RUBY

Credit: AP Photo/ Jacquelyn Martin

Lady Ruby walks with the Ancestors

on paths treacherous and costly;

on paths where the honorable and heroic

stay focused and resolute.

Truth  lights her path amidst the darkness

of hate and fear, and the lies and threats

of political bullies and white supremacists.

Her faithfulness is a shield.

Her resoluteness is a sword

which pierces the veil of dangerous actors

in conspiracies of hot, decaying  breath

constricting her strength but never defeating it.

Lady Ruby walks with the Ancestors.

They lift her up and show us the story long hidden,

and now threatened to be forbidden,

lest we learn what we need to know

to perfect our union and ring the freedom bell

for all Americans. This is the story Lady Ruby tells.

Lady Ruby walks with the Ancestors.

Let us walk beside her.
