What Has Obama Done? Here Are 194 Accomplishments! With Citations! From PCTC BLOG

http://pleasecutthecrap.typepad.com/main/what-has-obama-done-since-january-20-2009.html

If you’re one of those people who thinks President Obama is a “disappointment,” condolences for not getting your unicorn. And it’s time to grow up, get over it. We have four months to go before an election that will feature more political ads than you have ever seen before in your life. We’re not just having to beat Willard Romney; we also have to beat Citizens United. There will be TWO choices for president. You can either work for Obama and every other Democrat (yes, including Blue Dogs), or you can sit back and watch Willard Romney complete the job of taking apart the social fabric of the country that was begun by Ronald Reagan.

What makes the “disappointment” argument even more irritating is that it’s simply not true. He’s done nearly everything we elect a president to do, and he dd it all with little support from the left, and massive obstruction from the right. .

Is he perfect? No, he’s human. Does he deserve some criticism? At this point, it really doesn’t matter.

What does matter is that this president has compiled a STELLAR record. If you can look at this list of the president’s accomplishments after three years, and not be excited, you have a serious problem with perspective.

ROMNEY'S ON A ROLL-TWO LIES IN TWO DAYS,By Louise Annarino, August 9,2012

ROMNEY’S ON A ROLL-TWO LIES IN TWO DAYS,By Louise Annarino,August 9,2012

LIE#1

TANF(Temporary Assistance to Needy Families),signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1996 is the basis for welfare-to-work requirements. States must follow regulations meant to place welfare recipients in jobs. It includes a provision allowing waivers of state plans. The Obama Administration is the first in 16 years to listen to concerns from state officials, Republican and Democratic, that the work requirements are so rigid they actually create bureaucratic blocks to job placement. A memo from HHS (Health and Human Services)  one week ago stated it was open to experiments allowed by waiver to help states “find more effective mechanisms for helping families succeed in state employment.” The memo to the states reinforced that waivers would not be granted which could reduce access to employment, the same time limits would remain in place, and the waiver would be revoked if the experiment failed. “If states are not meeting their performance targets, their authority to test new ideas will be terminated,” said George Sheldon who oversees the program at HHS. (see more at http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=156741426 ).

In Romney-speak this translates to “I hope you understand that President Obama in just the last few days has tried to reverse that accomplishment by taking the work requirement out of welfare. That is wrong. If I’m president I will put work back in welfare.” See video at (http://www.mittromney.com/news/press/2012/08/mitt-romney-we-must-restore-work-welfare ). This video is now part of his political ads, is repeated as a factual account of what occurred on FOX news and elsewhere. This distortion of an effort to recognize the unique needs of individual states to put more welfare recipients to work should have been well-received, not falsely attacked, by those who so often argue for “states’ rights”.

Posted August 8, 2012 on Romney’s official website:

-Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison today made the following statement on President Obama’s dismantling of bipartisan welfare reforms:“President Obama’s push to eliminate welfare to work requirements goes against everything Republicans and Democrats—including President Bill Clinton—fought so hard for more than a dozen years ago.

  • Former Speaker Newt Gingrich today made the following statement on President Obama’s dismantling of bipartisan welfare reforms:“As an architect of the historic and bipartisan 1996 welfare reform bill, I am disturbed and angered that the Obama administration is undoing the act’s central concept of a welfare-to-work requirement. The hugely successful reform saved billions for taxpayers

This lie is particularly disheartening when tied to his comments to NAACP, and subsequent speeches wherein he uses racial code talk “people who want to get free stuff”, “big bucks who won’t work”. His lies reinforce negative racial stereotypes, and foster racial and class division. These lies do more harm than costing one’s opponent an election.

LIE#2

After some Ohio voters faced hours-long lines at polling places during the 2004 presidential election, the state adopted reforms designed to prevent similar problems in the future. Those reforms included allowing voters to cast ballots at county boards of elections for an extended period before elections.

Earlier this year the Republican-controlled Ohio Legislature passed an Election Reform Law (HB 194)under the guise of stopping non-existent voter fraud. “The…closely-analyzed 2004 election in Ohio revealed a voter fraud rate of 0.00004%. National Weather Service data shows that Americans are struck and killed by lightning about as often.” (see more at http://www.brennancenter.org/content/resource/policy_brief_on_the_truth_about_voter_fraud/ ).

In reaction to the more than 300,000 signatures on a petition by Ohioans to place a referendum to repeal the law on the Nov. 6, 2012 ballot, Republican Secretary of State Jon Husted convinced the legislature to repeal the law. Two weeks after HB 194 passed, another law (HB 224) affirmed a rolled back early voting three days before an election, except for active military and overseas voters whose prior rights had been overlooked when HB 194 was passed.

This seemed redundant for other voters already denied under law (HB 194). HB224 was passed as an emergency measure and super majority to protect the early voting rights of active military and overseas voters who were not considered when passing HB 194. It was meant to correct an oversight but in effect It continued the suppression of voting the 3 days before an election except for active military and overseas voters.

Although HB 194 was repealed HB 224 remains, including the restrictions on week-end voting repealed in HB 194. Clearly what appears to be a technicality is suppressing votes. In the last presidential election 93,000 Ohioans voted on that week-end.

The Obama campaign filed a lawsuit to restore the right of all Ohioans to vote,as they did in 2008, during the three days before the Tuesday election. It does not seek to disenfranchise military and overseas voters.”Plaintiffs seek to restore for all voters access to early voting through the Monday before Election Day,” the Obama campaign’s brief said. “Neither the substance of its Equal Protection claim, nor the relief requested, challenges the legislature’s authority to make appropriate accommodation, including early voting during the period in question, for military voters, their spouses or dependents. The question before the Court is whether, in the circumstances of this case, the State of Ohio may arbitrarily and without justification withdraw from all other Ohio eligible voters the same right they previously had to vote the weekend and Monday before election day.”

The lawsuit argues that all Ohio voters should be permitted to cast ballots that weekend, as members of the U.S. military are permitted to do. The complaint alleged that Ohio’s legislature failed to justify the disparate treatment between military and nonmilitary voters, and contended the “unequal burden on the fundamental right to vote violates the Equal Protection Clause of the United States Constitution.”

In Romney-speak this translate to “President Obama’s lawsuit claiming it is unconstitutional for Ohio to allow servicemen and women extended early voting privileges during the state’s early voting period is an outrage,” the Republican candidate’s Facebook message proclaimed. Next came a statement from the campaign: “We Must Defend the Rights of Military Voters.” Right-wing bloggers took it from there, and the outraged headlines came pouring forth. ( see more at http://prospect.org/article/red-white-and-untrue-romneys-big-lie-about-military-voting ).

The Romney campaign asserts that military personnel are losing the extension of time to vote they deserve, and have historically had, while serving overseas. But the voters in question are not voting absentee; they are voting in-person on absentee ballots. Absentee ballots filed from overseas are not created by the law being challenged.

The government already assures extra efforts for military voters—thanks in part to President Obama. He signed the Military Overseas Voter Empowerment (MOVE) Act, which made a number of extra voting guarantees to servicemen and women overseas. For example, military bases now must have voter-registration services, and those serving overseas are allowed to send and receive their applications for voter registration and absentee ballots by email or fax as well as through the mail. Diane Mazur, a law professor at the University of Florida and a former Air Force officer, told Buzzfeed that the groups’ argument is “extremely misleading.” Mazur says there’s no history of of special privilege for military voters casting a ballot in person. “The idea that service member are fuller citizens than the rest of America is a disaster for military professionalism,” she says.

The problem with lies is that they must be sustained. Surrogates like Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, campaign advisers, newscasters become pawns used to sow distortion and division. Voters are made needlessly fearful. Fifteen military organizations pumped up by team Romney intervened in the Ohio law suit believing they face a loss of voting privileges. Jon Stoltz, who heads the group VoteVets, and supports the Obama campaign’s lawsuit said in a telephone call to reporters “What appalled me so much about the narrative in Ohio is that the Romney campaign is supporting legislation that actually denies 900,000 veterans in the state of Ohio the right to vote early…In short, Mitt Romney supports efforts to make voting more difficult for the very people who have put their lives on the line,” Soltz notes.

The facts show that Romney’s claim about restricting military voting is a blatant distortion. The purpose of the lawsuit is to ensure that every Ohioan—including military voters—has the right to make their voices heard at the polls.

Everyone lies,so tey say. But, the complete misrepresentation of fact. The total reversal of an opponent’s credited position on an issue, the blatant change of historical fact, the warping of legal pleadings to serve a partisan political agenda are so overwhelmingly unique in their proportionality to past campaign lies they beggar description. This is something new. This is Romney-speak.

GRATITUDE FOR HARD TIMES, By Louise Annarino,August 6, 2012

GRATITUDE FOR THE HARD TIMES, By Louise Annarino, August 6, 2012

The day I left home for college in 1967 my dad handed me $20. I tried not to accept it, knowing my dad’s pay was only $50 per week and it meant a huge sacrifice. But he insisted saying, “Mommy and I don’t know when we will be able to give you any money again, so take it.” When I got to campus I found an on-campus job through government sponsored work-study program with the help of campus counselors. I also found an intermittent off-campus job stuffing envelopes at Hillel House, having gotten to know the rabbi while taking his free seminar on Martin Buber. I was the first to show up the day he was accepting applications, and he asked me to wait until Jewish students had registered, promising a spot to my Catholic self should he have a remaining opening. At the end of registration 3 hours later I, and a friend who was is the daughter of a Methodist minister, were his only students. I learned more from him than any other professor that first year on campus, and he called me whenever he needed extra office help. The watchful African-American woman who ran Lincoln Tower’s snack bar on Sunday nights, the only meal not included in our meal plan, asked me one Sunday night, “Why do you never order anything when you come through the line with your friends?”. I explained I was a scholarship student and could not afford Sunday night dinner but liked to sit and chat with my friends before we got back to our studies. She immediately told me “Stand right there!” and placed a cheeseburger, fries and a salad on a tray and told me to come through her line every Sunday and she would make sure I had something to eat. I did and she did. It was great not to be hungry.

These acts of generosity put me through college. Yes,I worked hard and constantly. I worked at least 2 jobs over Christmas and Spring breaks.I took summer classes and worked full-time. I soon became an RA (resident advisor) to earn free room and board, and kept a part-time job to cover books and incidentals. But that is not the issue. Everyone works hard in some way at some time; those of us from impoverished backgrounds in every way, all of the time. The issue is that I could not have obtained a bachelor, master and law degrees without the help of others every step of the way. I did not do it alone. No one does anything alone. The thankfulness I feel for those who helped is a constant source of faith and hope for me. Gratitude has made life bearable during the hard times. I can never pay forward so much as I have been given. There is not enough time left in my single life to repay the kindness of so many lives.

When I hear President Obama attacked in political ads featuring business owners chiding him for demeaning their accomplishment by suggesting they did not “make it” on their own; and hear Mitt Romney at the close continue the misrepresentation of the president’s words by affirming, “I am Mitt Romney and I approve this message” I cringe. What arrogance and bravado is needed to so clearly lie about the president who has done everything possible to help business, especially those very small-business owners appearing in such ads. How ironic that Mitt Romney and members of his party who have repeatedly blocked the pro-business agenda of president Obama, and Mitt Romney who off-shores workers’ jobs and his profits after gutting American companies  thinks he has the moral authority to approve any message on American job and business creation. He made his billions destroying jobs and small businesses. The Paul Ryan budget he backs would eliminate  help for small businesses.

I digress. Again, this is not the point. The point is no businessman created any business on his own. Businesses are not only built and thrive because of infrastructure and tax policies supported by tax dollars. They are built by workers who labor for the business owner day after day, week after week; workers who are educated in our elementary and secondary schools, and in  our universities and technical programs; workers who are trained in union apprenticeship and journeymen programs; workers who earn minimum wage or union wage while the owner pays himself a salary 10 times (or more)the highest worker’s wage and takes a percentage of the profits. Worker productivity also builds his business. He does nothing alone, but take the credit.

Instead of a faith and hope filled life of gratitude such business owners appear to lead bitter and fearful lives. I started out being disgusted with them. Now, I feel only pity for them. However, such men cannot be elected to lead this country forward. They are not to be trusted with the fruits of our labor. They do not understand it. They do not appreciate it. They do not honor it. They would squander it and steal it to fill the empty void in their own lives.

It is men like President Barack Obama, Vice-President Joe Biden, and  Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown who remind us of our value, who support our dreams, who invest in our futures. it is they who will lead this country through hard times, as so many helped me through mine.

WHY ROMNEY IS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT AND AWAY FROM TAX DISCLOSURES,By Louise Annarino, August 3, 2012

WHY ROMNEY IS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT AND AWAY FROM TAX DISCLOSURES, By Louise Annarino, August 3, 2012

Recently, (Democracy for America)DFA members attempted to deliver more than 245,300 petition signatures to Romney’s Boston campaign headquarters, asking for disclosure of more of his tax returns. They were turned away and escorted out of the building. This not the first, nor will it be the last request for more information from Mr. Romney regarding his tax returns. Every time he is asked he inadvertently drops another tidbit of information not only by what he let’s slip  (I’ve been audited a few times) but by what he refuses to discuss (I don’t know if I ever paid zero% but I’ll get back to you). To give him credit he never squirms while he skids.

Now, Senator Harry Reid is playing a well-worn political game of filling in the missing blanks for Romney with unsubstantiated allegations that Romney did not pay any tax for more than 10 years. This may or may not be true. This may be fun to watch. Games are fun to watch. I think this is too serious a matter to play games. I also find it undignified and wrong to make unsubstantiated charges against anyone. Besides, I don’t think Romney would refuse to open his tax returns for scrutiny simply because he paid no or very little tax. He is too proud of his ability to use the system for his personal gain to want to hide his skill at making and keeping money. He clearly has no qualms about outsourcing workers, gutting and shutting down companies. He brags about it constantly. He knows Americans admire millionaire entrepreneurs, and each aspires to become one. This would not be enough for Romney to fail to disclose his tax returns. There must be more than how much he earned and how much tax he paid in those returns and their attachments. There must be more he does not want us to know.

I would submit that Romney hides his returns for the same reason he is running for president. He is running as the front man for the now-global military-industrial-banking complex – the Great Pirates– which has been seeking more power over government. We have openly watched this replacement of political power owned by American voters with corporate power owned by too-big-to-fail-or share business since Ronald Reagan’s presidency through George W. Bush’s. President Obama’s greatest fight to change the way Washington works has been with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and ALEC via the Republican Party and Blue-dog Democrats. Obama’s pragmatism is the only thing which has saved him and us thus far.

When Reagan busted the air-traffic controller’s strike it was a blow against unions. The union of American workers was hard fought, opposed at every step by the Great Pirates. They have tried ever since to dismantle unions because unions are the one thing standing in their way of absolute domination of workers, wages, hours, safety and working conditions. Unions have led the environmental and consumer movements by opening our eyes to unsanitary conditions, unsafe products, hazardous chemicals and processes, and threats to our health and safety. Unions have led the movement for technical schools and training, access to higher education, and improved school models and increased funding for education. The Great Pirates want to eliminate the EPA, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Consumer Product Safety Commission, Department of Education, Federal Reserve and any institution in their way as they seek to maximize profits at the expense of our people and our planet. They seek small government or no government so they may pursue wealth with no restrictions, and no concern for anyone’s welfare but their own.

Mr. Romney, like George W. Bush is not his own man. He belongs to the Great Pirates fraternity, and is proud of it. But, he and they cannot afford for us to discover how that fraternity works against us. Why Romney? Why now? The Great Pirates now have firmly in place a global consortium of business and banks. They ply their trade across borders and seas as pirates of old did. They seek to control not only American workers, but the world’s workers. They have alliances not only with American bankers but with the world’s bankers. It is no mystery that Romney met privately with British bankers while in London, the same persons associated with LIBOR. Do we know why? We do know he was fund-raising. Fund-raising from foreign interests?  He told us this. It is not a point of shame nor worry for him. What don’t we know about his foreign associations with the old friends  he met with while abroad. It is reported he is an old friend of, and used to work with Bebe Netanyahu. Doing exactly what?

What is it about politics that renders Romney silent? He is a bright and literate man, capable of organizing and running companies. What is he hiding? He disappears inside himself when campaigning, and becomes robotic and nonsensical. Since his first political run for Governor of Massachusetts, this is his campaign modus operandi. He is uncomfortable and unsure of what to say unless someone else writes his script. Then he knows no shame, no uncertainty. Like George W. Bush, he is not his own man. He is the Great Pirates’ man. In front of the American public, he is only comfortable stepping back inside himself and being their man. It pays very well. Neither the Great Pirates, nor Mitt Romney, would have it any other way.

And,why has the Republican party shoved aside its great conservative intellects like Buckley, Will, and Krauthammer for tea-party ideologues like Buchanan, Palin, and Bachmann? The coffers of the Great Pirates exceeds the traditional Republican campaign chest, which in part led to McCain’s loss in 2008. Popular support for Obama with most donations less that $200 and a changing demographic less supportive of the Republican party platform cleared the way for tea party candidates supported by Great Pirates to win seats in the House and Senate in 2010. Republican leaders of Congress Sen.Mitch McConnel and Rep. John Boehner had little financial choice but to allow the tea party front for the Great Pirates take the lead strings from their tired, tight hands. Eric Cantor and Paul Ryan, bidding for leadership, jumped the Republican ship for the Pirate ship to McConnell’s and Boehner’s chagrin. If Congress is at sea, it is because the Great Pirates have boarded the Ship of State.

Their next goal, planned and put into operation since Inauguration Day, is to mutiny against the captain and make President Obama a one-term president.

The answer to why this multi-billionaire would run for president is not merely ego, nor to “outdo Dad”. He is the right pirate for the times, but he can’t tell you that!

GO TO THE BACK OF THE BUS,WHAT BUS?,By Louise Annarino,July 15, 2012

GO TO THE BACK OF THE BUS, WHAT BUS?, By Louise Annarino, July 15,2012

“The racial diversity among Democrats and the lack of it among Republicans means that the two bases bring differing concerns to the national debate.”

Charles blow, Not Afraid To Talk About Race, NYT, Opinion, 6-7-2012,  http://campaignstops.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/06/07/not-afraid-to-talk-about-race/?nl=todaysheadlines&emc=edit_th_20120607

But, do we really have different concerns as Americans? Everyone wants a stable and decent job; one which pays enough to provide safe housing, safe food supply, generous health care, sound education, affordable transportation, and reliable retirement income.  Just the basics, but unpredictable for the racially-diverse urban poor, and the more-segregated homogeneous rural poor. Demographic studies and census data indicate that the gap between the availability of basic necessities for the top 2% and the rest of us is ever-widening. The issue of race as part of our analysis of how we can turn this situation on its head is clearest in considering the needs of the the multi-racial urban cores of our cities.

Some cities such as Columbus, Ohio are making come-backs while others like Detroit are decaying from within. But even in Columbus, Ohio, those areas where racial diversity is strongest, the improvements are weakest. Of course mayors are hampered by governors who turn away federal dollars meant to address the needs of the urban core as well as the rest of the state.

No where is this more apparent than in the refusal of federal transportation dollars to build interurban rail service, high speed rail, and slow rail between key cities within a state. One of the reasons unemployment is so much higher in urban cores where minorities live is that white flight to the suburbs for housing was also white flight of jobs to the suburbs. Companies moved their headquarters and manufacturing plants to the outskirts of cities. Malls and shopping areas closed in the urban core to move to suburban malls, and more jobs were lost. Even major union halls moved outside the city core. Lack of public transportation made it more likely organizations would move out of the urban core to facilitate parking. But, many of our urban poor lack automobiles and are, therefore, left out of a city’s forward commerce. They simply are denied any opportunity to turn things around themselves. If they can’t get to an interview to get a job, then get to a job to earn money, they have no way to change the game. Apartments  built outside the city core seldom have sidewalks, and are in areas not designed for walking or biking as a means of transportation. And these areas still lack substantial bus service, and no rail service.

In Columbus, bus service is limited for those seeking jobs outside the urban core. There is little to no bus service from downtown to the outlying malls, business and plants. Minorities are trapped jobless within the city core. A plan to connect the downtown with outlying areas by rail with federal transportation dollars was scrapped when Gov. John Kasich (R-OH) returned federal grant made to Ohio. In the latest transportation bill  the deficit argument was used to eliminate and cut funds for public transportation projects, bike trails etc. There is little understanding of the transportation needs of voters in our city core.

Thus, our attitude toward our racially diverse urban populations affects our transportation decisions. We are willing to spend tax dollars to maintain the status quo for those who fled the cities, abandoning our fellow citizens to second class status. Mainly white Republican voters agree with racially diverse Democratic voters that America needs a strong transportation system. The difference is that Republicans don’t notice that their tax and spend policies ignore the needs of so many fellow citizens in our  urban cores. They fled for the same reason they refuse to fund the urban core’s survival. As President Obama says, “We can do better than this.”

REPUBLICANS SPEAK WITH FORKED TONGUES RE: SMALL BUSINESSES, By Louise Annarino,July 14,2012

REPUBLICANS SPEAK WITH FORKED TONGUES RE: SMALL BUSINESSES, By Louise Annarino, July 14, 2012

My first small business was collecting newspapers and magazines from the garbage cans along the alley running beside our house when I was first old enough to pull a wagon. My Mother watched me and my brother as we trudged along pulling our load across the street to Mr. Schombarger’s junk yard. We placed the full wagon on the scale built into the roadway after the heavy trucks had cleared;then, climbed up the steps to the loading dock to watch the weight register on the huge scale above our heads. “Remember the numbers”, Mr. Schombarger would remind us. Next, we ran down the steps to empty the wagon’s contents into a bin provided by a worker, and pulled the empty wagon back onto the scale. “Okay, kids, come up and watch the numbers again”,said Mr. Schombarger, as he weighed the empty wagon. Subtracting the numbers gave us the weight we would be paid for our load. We were rich! Our business kept us in penny candy from Mrs. Rowe’s corner store every night, with an ice cream cone once a week, and if we saved our money, an occasional comic book. Whenever we needed more money we collected more paper. We were our own market.

I also ran errands for neighbors for ten cents (to Mr Van’s or Mrs. Rowe’s neighborhood groceries), for a quarter for a trip to the A&P uptown; cleaned woodwork and washed windows, a quarter; and helped with babies, free service. When I was 12 I began babysitting for $1 per child per night.

My brother had a paper route. Being a girl, I was not eligible for a route. He graciously offered me a chance to make some cash. If I delivered all his papers and made his route collections I got to keep 10% of his salary. I fell for the scam. I loved working, and getting around the sexist system firmly in place. Women still work the same jobs for less money. Some things never change. Ask Lily Ledbetter.

I once earned enough money to take my entire family to the New York World’s Fair for a full week by making fondant-rum candy shaped and decorated like small pieces of fruit. My father noticed my experiment, took the dish to his restaurant the next day and came home with 35 orders. Every day after school for months I made 30-50 dozen candies, placing 12 on each milk glass bowl lined with green Easter grass. Seeing the World’s Fair was a dream come true. Running a small business is in my blood. My dad and uncles had a small business for 38 years, The Center Cafe. It is daunting, calls for daring, and is plain hard work with long hours. They are our country’s economic lifeblood.

Everyone agrees small businesses are the engine driving America’s economy. Small firms of less than 500 employees make up 99.9% of America’s businesses. (see more at  http://www.smallbusinessnotes.com/small-business-resources/how-many-small-businesses-are-there.html). Of these, 96% have 50 or fewer employees.(see more at   http://useconomy.about.com/od/glossary/g/small_businesses.htm Only 3% of small businesses earn more than $250,000 per year. Approximately 70% of the wealthy don’t own a small business. Obviously, the wealthy 2-3% don’t want the amount they earn above 2% to lose overgenerous tax breaks. But they argue a different story.

Despite these facts, to president Obama’s announcement that he would ask Congress to extend the Bush tax cuts for incomes below $250,000, Mr. Romney replied this is an unacceptable and burdensome tax increase on small business, never mentioning the impact on his very large business income. Congressional Republicans expressed their opposition stating that many small business owners report their business income as personal income. But, as the president correctly points out the tax increases is only on the amount earned over $250,000; and, it affects 3% of small businesses. Under the president’s plan 98% of households and 97% of small businesses would receive a tax cut. (see more at New York Times (7/10/12)

The factual distortions of Republican leadership, including those of presidential candidate Mitt Romney, Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) and House Leader, Rep.John Boehner (R-OH) each of whom should know better, do not serve the country well.  If the tax cuts expire for earnings $250,000 and up, the deficit could be reduced by $700 billion over the next 10 years. (For more, see Extend Bush Tax).

Yesterday, the Senate Republicans blocked The Small Business Jobs and Tax Relief Act using the filibuster to keep a vote from even reaching the floor. The bill gave business tax credits up to $500,000 for boosting payroll, thus hiring more workers. It gave a 1 year extension a 100% rate under which businesses can claim bonus depreciation tax deductions on capital investments to install new equipment, open more manufacturing lines etc. (see more at (http://influencealley.nationaljournal.com/2012/07/senate-republicans-block-small.php). The bill was estimated to create  nearly 1 million jobs, 650,000 in small mom and pop operations by use of a cap. Next week, Republicans are expected to block a bill which would give tax breaks to firms returning overseas jobs to the U.S. and raise taxes on companies that off-shore. Certainly, Mr. Romeny can’t be happy about the impact such a law would have on his off-shore ventures.

The rational given by Republican for blocking the bill that it was overpolitical underscores the true reason for blocking a bill which would move forward the country’s economic recovery…to block President Obama’s re-election at the expense of small business growth and more jobs here in the U.S.  While decrying the lapse of tax credits to earnings above $250,000 because of their distorted claim of a negative effect on small business, while blocking bills in support of small business is the height of Republican hypocrisy. Using the filibuster to play political games is immoral bully-behavior and we must call them out for such irresponsible and destructive behavior towards this country and its people’s welfare. The president has the bully pulpit; but,the Republicans are simply bullies who attack each of us to get to him. PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE MAN BEHIND THAT CURTAIN: SEC.501(C)(4) AND THE 2012 ELECTION,By Louise Annarino,July 10, 2012

PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE MAN BEHIND THAT CURTAIN: Sec. 501(c)(4) and the 2012 Election, By Louise Annarino, July 10, 2012

We live in the Land of Oz these days; not the movie, but our very lives, Is anyone out there listening to Dorothy’s lament? She has suffered through terrible storms, as have we: climate change, unfunded wars, 9/11 attack, bank fraud, mortgage melt-down, economic recession/depression, privatization and de-regulation, destruction of the middle-class, erosion of a safety net, attacks on public servants, women, immigrants and union workers. She fears she has lost all. She sees no clear future. The American Dream seems to be merely that, a dream. She simply wants to find her way home, home to the familiar where she feels safe, where she awakes from dreams with the ability to make them happen. Unfortunately, like Americans today, she does not realize she has the power within herself to find her way.

One person finally listens to her; but only when he realizes he can benefit from bringing her within his fold.He opens the door to Oz, invites her in,and promises her exactly what she wants. She falls for the mirage created by a Karl Rovian version of a “very nice man” but “very bad wizard” who uses tricks and deceptions to build a false idea that Dorothy and her buddies must risk all, and take on the formidable Wicked Witch of the West, an enemy he fears and has been unable to contain, before he will help her go home to Kansas. He fully expects she will not survive the ordeal; thus, he is no danger of having to make good on his promises. A typical political operative.

But Dorothy, again like Americans, is determined to succeed with the help of her stalwart friends. It is her willingness to put every concern aside and throw a bucket of water on Scarecrow whom the witch has set afire, which melts away the witch, and her threats. Dorothy saves herself, her friends, the entire city of Oz, even the Wizard himself.

When Dorothy returns to Oz the Wizard plays games with her three compatriots:the Cowardly Lion is given a badge for courage, the Scarecrow is given a diploma for his brains, and a ticking clock to the Tin Man for a heart. Each of these qualities are already present within the characters, but like Dorothy, they have been unable to recognize this fact on their own.

In a memorable scene while Dorothy awaits word from the wizard regarding her return home, her dog Toto pulls back a curtain revealing a man turning gears on the machinery which has created the lie that is the Land of Oz, the lie the people of Oz have also fallen for. He shouts into his microphone, “Pay no Attention to the man behind that curtain.” The wizard sees his power crumbling, and Dorothy sees the truth. She confronts him with such conviction, not allowing him to pull the curtain closed again, and he admits his flawed humanity.  If only we had journalists, politicians, and jurists so brave as Toto, so fearless as Dorothy, so willing to pull back the curtains and reveal truth.

Perhaps we do. Despite the fact that the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) is slow to act, and probably will not do so before 2012 election, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee filed a formal complaint this week against three social welfare groups, charging them with willful violation of federal election law: Crossroads Grassroots Policy Strategies,Americans for Prosperity, and 60 Plus Association. THese organizations hid behind the curtain provided by section 501(c)(4) of the tax code, which grants them tax exempt status for social welfare work and allows donors to remain anonymous. Public policy is often written into the tax code. In the case of 501(c)(4)s all funds collected are deemed to serve a social welfare purpose which would likely save the government tax dollars which would otherwise need to be spent to assure the public welfare tasks performed by the  organization.

What are these organizations actually doing? Buying political attack ads against specific Democratic candidates. Crossroads (Rove and former RNC Chair Ed Gillespie) has already spent $25 million on ads attacking President Obama, and plans to spend nearly $40 million (Rove’s Crossroads GPS) attacking Democratic senatorial candidates. Americans for Prosperity (David and Charles Koch) has poured $1 million into Ohio to defeat Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown, attacks only Democratic candidates, and has chapters in at least 38 states.(see more at http://www.opensecrets.org/outsidespending/detail.php?cmte=Americans+for+Prosperity.) In 2009, Rachel Maddow opened the curtain on 60 Plus Association (Pharmaceutical Industry) disclosing its ties to the GOP, disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff and the lobbying group Bonner & Associates.  (see more at http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=60_Plus_Association) Social welfare? Welcome to Oz.

To anyone willing to pay attention to that man behind the curtain it is clear the major purpose of such groups is federal campaign activity, political benefit not social welfare. Therefore, they should not be treated as 501(c)(4) organizations but as political committees, and their donors must be disclosed. Then, each of us, like Dorothy and her companions, will be able to see the truth behind the messages, tricks, distortions and lies that are Oz; and, find our way home. As a result of CITIZENS UNITED, President Obama has for the first time accepted donations from PACS and SUPER PACS, but not from a 501(C)(4) organization. He refuses to draw a curtain over our eyes. His donors are disclosed, along with his tax returns, and bank balances. Is the Mitt Romney behind that curtain? He may be a very good man but he is a very bad wizard.

THE SCIENCE OF THE FAITHFUL IN NEED OF AIR CONDITIONING,By Louise Annarino

THE SCIENCE OF THE FAITHFUL IN NEED OF AIR CONDITIONING by Louise Annarino, July 5, 2012

In High School Biology class Sister Clare Louise,Ph.D. opened our minds to the endless possibilities of life within our universe and beyond it. Her brilliance and enthusiasm drew us to her class like moths to the flame. She turned us into scientists, explorers of our natural world, formulating theories as easily and readily as breathing. Professor Alrutz, biology professor at nearby Dennison University, was a frequent guest lecturer who gave us the most instructive advice of our lives: “Do what you love, despite what anyone else says, what pays best, and what seems the most reasonable course. You will only die happy by having lived life doing what you love.” Dr. Alrutz and Sister Clare Louise loved science and they gave that love to their students.

Our first field trip was to Cranberry Bog sitting afloat in Buckeye, Lake near Newark, Ohio. How delighted we were to row out to the island and bounce our way across its primordial surface of peat, grinning and springing bogonauts on a mission of discovery. The history of the bog’s creation, its ancient roots and connection to similar bogs worldwide took us on an historical and geographic journey as well. We collected samples of pitcher plants to study in the classroom. Today, the bog, as predicted by Prof. Alrutz is half the size it was then, the lake speed-boats’ wake a constant eroding pressure. one can no longer walk on the peat, but must cross over the surface on boardwalks. Only a few permits to visit are now granted.

Experiment after experiment, we learned not only the results of those experiments but the use of scientific theory to advance knowledge; and the difference between fictional theories and scientific theory. Sister discussed the problem beginning to grow within the minds of those uneducated in scientific principles who saw a conflict between science and religion. She shook her head at the simple answer; science does not challenge God, it explains his creation, it shows us who He is and how He created our universes. Understanding science brings us closer to, not farther from, His presence. Having established that, we were free to explore anything and everything. And we did. The discovery of the Higgs bosun, the so-called “God particle”, would have excited Sr. Clare Louise; not threatened her faith. Our biblical creation theory seems to be a metaphor for what physicists are now discovering as the implicit nature of creation itself.

Today, we live in the culture anticipated by Sr. Clare Louise. Religious leaders who fear science undercuts the faith of their flocks are being used by politicians to undermine scientific theory as a way to block legislation they do not support. Why would a politician not support legislation based on science? Money. Always follow the money to find the answer. Sister Clare Louise and my father both taught me that theory. And, I think I can prove it.

Marketing of political propaganda has given the words “climate change” the same derogatory implications as “Obamacare”. The oil industry will do all it can to undermine the move to green energy. Opponents of climate change are right in one respect: Climate change is not coming; it is already here. It is difficult for any politician to deal with this fact. As President Obama stated in a Rolling Stone interview (Read more: http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/ready-for-the-fight-rolling-stone-interview-with-barack-obama-20120425#ixzz1zkfyZpVv):

“Part of the challenge over these past three years has been that people’s number-one priority is finding a job and paying the mortgage and dealing with high gas prices. In that environment, it’s been easy for the other side to pour millions of dollars into a campaign to debunk climate-change science. I suspect that over the next six months, this is going to be a debate that will become part of the campaign, and I will be very clear in voicing my belief that we’re going to have to take further steps to deal with climate change in a serious way. That there’s a way to do it that is entirely compatible with strong economic growth and job creation – that taking steps, for example, to retrofit buildings all across America with existing technologies will reduce our power usage by 15 or 20 percent. That’s an achievable goal, and we should be getting started now.”

Even this stance will not be enough to prevent the excessive heating of the ocean and air, sever storms, and extreme fires. While a single event can’t be proven to be caused by climate change the pattern in its entirety fits the proposed model, unfortunately, at a faster than expected rate of change. Nine of the ten warmest years were within the past 12 years;the warmest until now in 2010. As Eugene Robinson explains in a recent Washington Post article (see more at http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/eugene-robinson-feeling-the-heat/2012/07/02/gJQANNZGJW_story.html), “Critics have blasted the Obama administration’s unfruitful investment in solar energy. But if government-funded research had managed to lower the price of solar panels to the point where it became economical to install them on residential roofs, all you global-warming skeptics would have air conditioning right now. I’m just sayin’.”

Nevertheless, presidential candidate Mitt Romney refuses to face the new climate reality. “My view is that we don’t know what’s causing climate change on this planet,” Romney said at a fundraiser last fall. “And the idea of spending trillions and trillions of dollars to try to reduce CO2 emissions is not the right course for us.” Then, what is the right course? To spend trillions of dollars to rebuild the eastern seaboard inland, including Wall Street which faces repetitive flooding and storm surge damage, if not complete inundation along Atlantic coast from North Carolina to Cape Hatteras. Florida is in particular peril as well. (see more: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/14/science/earth/study-rising-sea-levels-a-risk-to-coastal-states.html). It is the National Flood Insurance Program set up by Congress or state insurance pools, not private insurance companies, our tax dollars, which rebuild infrastructure damage caused by these extreme coastal storms. The cost of ignoring climate change is far greater than the cost of planning for it.

American Electric Power says burying an improved power grid below ground, protected from the extreme storms of this past week, is too costly (See more:All Sides With Anne Fisher, NPR, http://www.ohiochannel.org/MediaLibrary/Media.aspx?fileId=1363750). Half a million central Ohioans lost electric service during the first storm, the second storm took another 20,000 off grid two days ago and a third storm took another 20,000 off grid last night. AEP assures us 90% of customers will have electric restored 10 days after the first storm. More disturbing is the fact that 2,000 customers whose electricity had been restored were removed from the grid by AEP for several hours to avoid a brown-out from increased demand as customers cope with nearly 2 weeks of near and over 100 degree temperatures, and night-time temperatures in the high 70’s and 80’s. So, even if there had been no prior storm loss, we AEP customers would face loss of service simply because the grid is inadequate to cope with the super-heated climate. Government would be better served to train and put to work our unemployed to upgrade the grid and build one less susceptible to exigencies of climate change.

I never feared storms. Thunder and lightening were part of the package which brought soothing rains; the dog-days of summer days de riguer. But, this prolonged super-heated storm ridden weather is frightening. It exposes out vulnerabilities as Al Gore’s lectures failed to do. Science is speaking the language of Mother Earth. It is time to listen to science, not the petrochemical industry. We cannot afford not to do so.

WE ARE BETTER THAN WE KNOW: HEAT WAVES AND HOT TOPICS by Louise Annarino

WE ARE BETTER THAN WE KNOW:HEAT WAVES AND HOT TOPICS,

By Louise Annarino,

July 1, 2012

The stress of enduring day after day of near and over 100 degrees heat with daily thunderstorms roaring through neighborhoods at 60-80 miles an hour uprooting trees, breaking off huge limbs, toppling trees and telephone poles onto cars and houses, plunging our cities and towns into darkness, isolating us from one another and formal information channels by shutting down cable television, and cell phone communication while we labor all day to clean up the mess and toss all night in the heat and humidity has been quite a test of patience and human kindness. Yet, we have endured. In fact, we have renewed our communities and our sense of belonging to one another. We have demonstrated lessons of fortitude and selflessness to our children. We are moving forward.

Neighbors have joined together to clear their streets and their lots of debris, pulling trees from right-of-ways, cutting them into manageable pieces, loading them on flatbeds and pick-ups, waiting in long lines to drop off their loads at city recycling lots to be turned into mulch for later on their neighbors’ yards and gardens. Citizens have worked to clear the storm debris alongside hundreds of private tree crews; while professional crews of power companies, hundreds from out of state, and city workers are able to access areas more easily and focus on doing what only they can do, what is beyond that of an average citizen’s ability, even when joined with neighbors in a common endeavor.

When every intersection must be treated as a four-way stop because lights are out and a normally 15 minute drive from Worthington to downtown Columbus takes merely 15 minutes more,I am surprisingly amazed. Because nearly everyone does act in communion with one another, and the few who cruise on through seem to be forgetful not self-serving, the process goes smoothly. We cooperate with one another with a mindfulness of our fellow travelers’ needs.

Customers are talking with one another and with the sales clerks, in darkened stores operating at half-power where the brightest light is the check-out screen on the electronic registers; and where clerks in stores with no power write up sales on a pad of paper, laughing with customers at their fumbling with this new old-way of doing things. Even the most taciturn among us join in these spontaneous conversations over where ice is still available and where gas pumps still work.

The mayor directed city workers to open fire hydrants during our over-heated afternoons so children can cool down, inviting them to play in the city’s fountains and water features. The memories of this struggle will be more joyful for our children and for us as a result of the mayor’s compassion and foresight. This is as it should be. This is what works. This is what moves us forward most quickly, no matter what the cause of our stress. This is what builds a strong community. We have easily shifted into a community of common interest where private citizens work alongside government workers and private company workers, and emergency personnel in government and private companies coordinate services for our common safety. While police cruise our darkened streets, National Guard soldiers go house-to-house checking to make sure our elderly are getting whatever help they need to survive the threatening heat.

When then-candidate Senator Barack Obama ran for president in 2007, I heard from a friend working for the Chamber of Commerce in southern ohio, and from another friend in northern Ohio that he had quietly made time to meet with local chamber leaders to discuss what Ohio needed to make our state economically strong, how business could be encouraged and strengthened, how his policies should be molded to assist small business owners in Ohio’s communities. At first, this surprised me. This was not a campaign stunt. Few people knew of these meetings. They were not being publicized, nor used as a campaign tactic for political gain. They were a sincere effort to learn more about Ohio’s business needs, and help Ohio’s employers and workers. It was, as I came to understand our president better, typical Barack: recognize we are all part of the same community, discuss our common concerns and needs, listen to the voices of others whom you know and of those whom you just met, learn from others, teach others, find common ground, plan how to improve things, offer a helping hand, work side-by-side no matter how difficult. That alone was enough to make me canvass so many hours for Barack Obama that I broke off bones in my foot from simple wear and tear.

How we have handled these climate-deranged days this week is a metaphor for how we must handle the challenges our nation faces as world economies shuttered and nearly stalled as a result of de-regulation and lack of institutional oversight of our business and banking enterprises, a strategy plotted, planned and financed by the U.S. Chamber of commerce, ALEC and fueled by Republican think-tanks. While Barack Obama was seeking common effort by recognizing the value of and including their ideas for a strong America, they were pledging to undermine every effort he made even those efforts which they had planned and initiated themselves under former administrations. Their goal was not to move us all forward, but to keep Barack Obama in the back of the bus.

If only they could have responded as our central Ohio cities and towns are responding to our latest crisis, as the good people of Ohio – Democrats,Republicans,Libertarians and Independents – are responding. Instead, our Governor John Kasich rejects transportation funds to build train routes reconnecting us to the rest of the country, tries to eliminate an avenue of communication with government workers by attacking collective bargaining, seeks to destroy and limit the economic and political power of unions representing hundreds of thousands of the government workers who keep our communities working safely and smoothly through crisis after crisis, and with his Lt. Governor Mary Taylor refuses to implement health care insurance exchanges offering Ohio businesses a structure to compete for health-care dollars. While he decries the nanny state he asks President Obama to declare Ohio in a state of emergency, to receive water, generators and other emergency supplies, cash and  other assistance from agencies he has argued should be cut or eliminated. I hope the events of these last days and weeks have thwarted the excesses of his ideological position.

But it is not just our governor, it is every governor across the nation who invites in and colludes with carpet-baggers (Tea Party) of ALEC, Koch Brothers, Chamber of Commerce to override the good judgement and wisdom of Ohio’s citizens who work hard every day to make Ohio strong, productive, and safe for themselves, their children and their neighbors. It is our state representatives and senators who attend ALEC events and introduce ALEC-drafted legislation as their own who ignore the needs and wisdom of Ohioans. Ohioans awoke to one another and the need to work together for the common good during this heat wave;hopefully, they will wake up to political reality of Ohio and throw out all carpet-baggers and those who do their bidding.

The insistence that taxes must be cut, and that tax cuts for individuals earning more than $250,000 dollars per year must be maintained at the expense of all our people’s employment, the education of our children and the safety of each of us and hoping for some trickle-down is a disproven approach to sustainable economic growth. Every Ohioan who endures this heat wave, works to clear up after the damaging storm, and reaches out to neighbors and strangers knows better than these elected representatives. Ohioans are better than this and behave toward one another better than this. When Barack Obama reminds us in his public addresses “We Americans are better than that”, this is what he means. We are better than that.

SO HE'S NOT PERFECT

SO, HE’S NOT PERFECT

Louise Annarino

June 8, 2012

I have been asked on more than a few occasions, by Democrats, Republicans, Independents and Rand supporters if there is anything I don’t like about President Obama. The question is a legitimate one since I remain so supportive of our current president, willingly and strongly oppose any attack upon his presidency or personhood, and encourage others to support him at every opportunity that one might consider my approval of the president too good to be true.

Supporting Obama, or any candidate for that matter, does not mean that one approves his every move, agrees with every position, or does not cringe upon occasion. It does not mean one is unable to assess with reason and wisdom Obama’s actions, or failure to act. It does not mean one does not appreciate certain positions of opposition candidates, nor of the opposition party. There are things I appreciate about every political party. I am seldom 100% happy with any of them.

We are all human. The Tower of Babel fell thousands of years ago and we have had trouble communicating with one another ever since. Of course we experience mistrust, tension and fear of one another. We are destined to disagree with one another. How do we overcome this? How do we not become cynical? How do we build a future in such a confusing world where people behave so contrarian? How do we remain supportive of one another? How do we move forward?

We move forward as President Obama has shown us: by simply putting one foot in front of the other and doing the best we can with what we have to work with. That is what a pragmatist does. Ideologues rant and rave, whine and tear up, demean and distort, and poke their fingers in another’s face. The pragmatist keeps on “keeping on”. While the moaners and groaners fall behind, the pragmatist moves forward. He never gives up. When he reaches a brick wall, he climbs over it, digs under it, or goes around it; but, he keeps moving. I recognize this trait in president Barack Obama because it is one of my own.

Some say President Obama and I are stubborn. Maybe so. I just know giving up on the goal is not an option; letting go of the plan, however, is often necessary and wise. We don’t always produce what we hoped for, but we keep producing. We don’t always reach the goals we sought, but we move closer. My writing is not always the best. I keep writing; and, leave to the Creator, the rest. Like President Obama, writers need thick skins. They offer themselves to the public, expecting  little but negative feedback.

Like President Obama, writers can take constructive criticism. Here is a list of criticisms of the man I fully support:

1.  Afghanistan – Leave ASAP or sooner.

2.  We need universal health care – medicare for all- single payer plan.

3.  Immigration – Dream Act immediately/prioritize unification of families over deportation/better quota system. Rein in ICE.

4.  Stop referring to Congress as the problem – Republicans in House and Republicans in Senate are obstructionists;not your own party. the vote statistics tell the tale. Use the data. Be clear and specific as to who is obstructing your efforts; Name names.

5.  Insist on Stimulus: explain that government must lead the recovery and why.

6.  Demand more proactive Justice Department – voting rights, civil rights, wall street fraud and collusion. Go after those who sank our economy with fraudulent schemes, including the “best bankers” in the country.

7.  More fireside chats for all, fewer rallies for supporters.

8.  Walk with Labor- we missed your promised leadership in Wisconsin.

9.  Rehire government workers – regular salary increases and no furloughs.

  1. You lead and let Republicans attack and show their true colors. Better to fight and lose, than to accede to wrong policies and principles.
  2. No more back-room deals with ANYBODY.

I wake up every day happy to know Barack Obama leads this country. I don’t believe anyone could do better than he has done with so little to work with and with such oppositional behavior by members of both parties; and despite Republican party obstructionism intended solely to destroy his presidency. Like other African-Americans before him, he has been measured against untenable standards to which white men are not held. He has faced daily racial assaults;some openly racist, most covert, and some subliminal even to the perpetrator. The intent of the Republican leadership is not simply to win the 2012 election, but to create such a negative and powerless image of an African-American presidency that we won’t soon elect another person of color. It is not simply about this election;it is about our racial history.

I could not be prouder of the way President and Ms. Obama face such long odds in our racially charged society, and overcome them. I am certain few, and certainly none of the current crop of, candidates could ever come close to their interpersonal and leadership skills. Politics is dirty business, and no politician can lead without getting muddy. But President Obama is open about this, admits his failures, remains transparent in his undertakings and asks us to hold him accountable. This is why I am voting for President Obama. He is not always able to make me perfectly happy;  but then, who could? Not Mr. Romney. Not Mr. Paul. He’s not perfect, and neither am I. None of us is.
