THE THIEF

Photo by Rodolfo Quiru00f3s on Pexels.com

Chronic pain is a thief

which stalks every bone and muscle

including the skull and brain

locking the flow across every sinew

of blood’s strength to reign

with ease and grace

across interstitial space.

Legs and pelvis lock in place

and the body can no longer race

along the path around the ponds.

Knees can no longer bend

to rest upon the earth and pull the weeds

nor plant the seeds

where the garden should grow.

Pain even steals words from where they reside

within the brain’s locked space

where dreams can no longer take hold

since sleep is stolen leaving behind

only grief and disgust at losses too great to abide.

The theft is its worst upon the face

where smiles are forced to hide

behind grimaces and half-closed eyes.

Laughter is the only relief to frozen space.

A sense of humor is the fiercer power

relieving pain hour after hour.

The deeper the laugh the looser the lock

that pain has placed upon the body clock.

Time passes with the pain as laughs invade

the place where pain thought to remain.

Laugh at pain and watch it rush,

pushed away by jokes and a comic crush.

PAIN

Photo by RDNE Stock project on Pexels.com

Pain changes all.

It puckers lips which can no longer speak.

It furrows brows and narrows the view.

It buckles the knees, threatens our fall.

There is so much pain everywhere,

enough to spare, too much to bear.

Pain always wants out,

it erupts in a shout,

“Make it stop!”

“Stop!”

“Just stop!”

Does anyone hear?

Too many continue

to pour salt in the wound.

Too few seem to care.

Too many press fingers on spots

that pulse too hot

until pain explodes and we drop

to our knees as we plead,

“Make it stop!”

“Stop!”

“Just stop!”

Human angels run by

and try not to cry

as they sound the alarm

and beg to succeed

in stopping the harm.

U.N. food trucks are bombed.

Opposition leaders are killed.

Weather tells stories

to gain our attention.

The earth pleads as do we,

“Make it stop!”

“Stop!”

“Just stop!”

WORD TO THE WISE AT SUNRISE

Injuries to the body

break more than spirit.

They break sleep

into small segments

devoid of dreams

held captive

by muscles that scream

“Stop. Change position.

Move. Get up!”

until night is no more.

Injured bodies awaken

before the dawn appears

to stretch, then stretch some more

until the pain rolls away

out of sight, out of a mind

on which it closes the door.

It keeps moving and maneuvering

to find balance in the spine

where all courage rests supine

allowing hope to settle

in muscle and bone

torn and worn by strife,

to keep the body moving

on its way to healing,

on its way to a fulfilled life.

Nations must do the same,

injured by past deeds.

They cannot heal

if they insist on staying asleep.

Their pain claims all their attention,

not to mention

stiffening their hearts, minds and souls,

until they are trapped in a body

politic, unbalanced, unable to move

up and out of the bed

with forceful strides

to claim the prize

of freedom and progress

to move through the world

pain free, on the way to healing,

stretching possibilities

to live in a world truly

peaceful and free.

Word to the wise, “Awake!”

A new dawn is here.
