LEVEL 2 EMERGENCY

Photo by Ahmed u061c on Pexels.com

Snow fell.

Quiet reigned

aboriginal and free

amid snow’s mystery.

Only the rabbits

left their tracks

to let us know

life still goes on

despite levels of emergency

tossed to and fro

by weather-casters

who took over the news

while Ukrainian children were bombed,

while fishermen’s boats were blown apart,

while military heroes were called traitors,

while brown and black people were secreted away

to secret places behind fencing and weapons,

while scientists were silenced by conspiracy,

while money poured in to false fronts

put in place by false leaders spouting false claims,

while real drug-runners, insurrectionists, rapists and worse

were pardoned and promoted to prod us to succumb

to the darkness weighing down our days as well as our nights.

And still,

the snow fell.

Pure and white,

it covered up every dirty secret.

It hid all sin from our sight.

it made us believe again.

In what?

What happens when it melts again,

as it surely will,

as it has since the Wampanoag

and every tribe lost its place,

as it has on every plantation

where enslaved persons

plotted to run away,

as it does now with every bonus paid to an ICE agent

subduing a person of color and hiding them away.

It snowed last night.

It is freezing and cold today.

Snow did not create an emergency.

We did.

And, we keep trying to cover it up.

It snowed last night.

SNOW!

We often think that Spring brings our first hopes

of a new life, a new world, a new cause to celebrate.

We need not wait for Spring to hope.

Eight inches of snow fell silently and cloaked

the surfaces of note that set our scene,

a scene fearfully bleak which clouds all thoughts

of a fearless life, and hides the fear which lies below

our greatest hopes, limited by what, we do not know.

We fear the worst after watching the news

meant to keep us watching, our nerves hanging on every word.

Snow!

Snow changes our landscape in a moment.

The deeper the snow, the greater the wind,

the more we see of all the possibilities

to change the world we ache to know.

All darkness and decay disappears by end of day.

White whorls of snow cover every branch of every tree,

and shrub and shed. No tracks yet made by others

who share this place with me.

The sun rises in  a fiercely blue sky and tracks appear

upon the new world of white light strewn across its face.

Snow!

Snow allows us to dream we can make all clean.

Our purity glows within each crystal caught by sunlight,

raising our spirits, capturing our innocence.

We believe we can change, too. All is right in a world draped in white.

My first hope does not wait for Spring.

It comes alive at the sight of the first big snow.

Snow reminds me that landscapes can change swiftly,

purely, beautifully aglow. Even war’s wounded landscapes

appear at peace when covered in snow.

Impoverished neighborhoods where crime rules breathe softly covered in snow.

Snow!

SPRING IS ON HER WAY

The skinny skunk slid

across the icy road

and skated

beneath a parked car.

The opossum curtailed

its icy walk and sailed

across the frozen pond,

as I looked on.

The bald eagle now nests

at the crest

of trees along the Scioto,

eyes searching for a break

in the ice, and river mice

slipping by below.

The earth yet lies frozen

no scent of soil thawed.

No breath of heated life

that I can tell by smell.

But, below the melting snow

new-green growth

of daisies glow

a greeting and a promise

that Spring is on her way.

It is a beautiful day.

For Wendy

Jewels like crystals shine

Across the frozen face of snow.

We say avoir, not good-bye.

For all we know

Light never dies

But quietly moves it’s glow

to other sights and sites

where Jewel now delights

In her new life.

And, yet, we mourn

Our grey-grief days

where Jewel once shown

in lives of our own.

A SNOWMAN AWAITS

A SNOWMAN AWAITS

Each morning I rise from dark night

and to the window I go,

after turning on lights,

opening blinds to the sights.

Each day I note lamps bright

in neighbors’ windows

where others are alight,

getting ready for life.

Six inches of Snow

and Wind on-a-blow

leaves windows in darkness.

No movement. No glow.

Sleeping in is a grace

on snowed-in days such as this.

Yet, I arise early lest I waste

a moment, the snow to embrace.

A snowman waits now

to  be rolled up tight,

as am I in boots and bundles

of fleece and down.

Too cold, you say

to go outdoors and play?

If the birds can do so

why cannot I?

Let us go.

Let us play.

let us bask in the cold.

You want to. I know.

GLOBAL WARMING

Too bright for the eyes

I could not watch

The sun rise.

and his behind cold lids

a fearful surprise

and dread.

No ribbon at a time

of colorful delight,

but a glaring reminder

all is not right.

The overheated sun

surprises the garden

drenched in snow

risen and fallen

from melting ice fields

in warming seas

I may never see.

The connection

between heat and ice

is broken off the glacier

of frozen hearts

in heated despair.

And we, blinded by glare

of the too-strong sun

are too blind now

To see.

NIGHT SNOW

NIGHT SNOW

In the middle of the night,

blankets hugged about the body tight,

I gathered them about and rose

slipping on boots to go

into the tranquility of the garden

bright with moonlight.

Snow now fills the tracks

of man and beast.

Huge flakes drift down

breathing quietly as I,

gently riding unseen currents,

falling onto still branches,

through a silent sky.

And I stand quietly along their side,

arms held aloft and wide,

chin tipped high

in awe of night,

and snow flakes in flight;

warmed by the sight.

I live! I am alive!

The Snow Tells Tales

The snow tells tales

of visitors both

friend and foes

to plants hidden below

it’s white blanket.

Squirrels and rabbits

Abound and bound

across icy surfaces,

where prints detail

their frequent ungainly

slide to places

they did not intend

To go. This I know

As I slide along

in boots unsure of purchase

on icy walks.

The squirrels and bunnies

keep concerning company.

Deer and raccoon,

rapacious dragoons

strip the seeds, and slips

of faded green

from bush and plant.

We all abide together

comrades in arms

Against the weather.

The snow

And so it fell,

the snow,

banished from the sky

To blend with earth

And feed the seed

of Spring.
