DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME

photo by W. Melvin, April 2025

Time Springs forward

dragging darkness

behind the lines

sketched on icy nights,

chilled by winds of change

blowing against the heat of sunlight,

marching tentatively

amid the raindrops

on hardened feet,

with tender hearts,

and fretful minds.

Where will this end?

wonder insects, birds and bees.

Will flowers and gardens of delight

ever bloom in peace again ?

Books, plays, trans,

people of color and women,

Jews and Muslims banned.

Libraries and museums shuttered.

Voice of America and PBS silenced ?

Knowledge buried with past misdeeds

and hidden gems of wisdom covered

by the mulch of indifference and lies.

How fast time flies

while truth is shattered and put asunder.

Forgotten history betrayed and bended,

despite our promise, “Never again!” has ended.

Now is the time to save the light.

Daily, now, again and again.

Spring into the light and fight.

Again and again and again

until the darkest days of winter

are overcome by a freedom summer’s light.

LATE SUMMER DAZE

LATE SUMMER, acrylic on canvass by Louise Annarino, 2024

The shades of summer pull slowly closed.

Sun drops quietly behind.

Shadows lengthen across grass carpets

moistened by the dew of cool nights

and warm days peaking through.

Autumn is on her way to paint

hot colors against cool blue skies.

Summer still lingers behind the shade

ready to surprise

with summer heat intent

on a hot reprise.

SUMMER

Photo by Hassan OUAJBIR on Pexels.com

Summer wears her heart on her sleeve.

Her false smiles and beguiling ways

encourages all to believe

that she is available to play flirtatious games.

But, know that Summer will always have her way.

She drags us away from kitchens, desks

and comfy chairs out into her garden on display.

She allows us to become more aware

of her silken charms directed our way.

Droughts and cloudbursts,

sun that brightens and burns our skin,

Allergens and particulates that settle within

make it hard to breathe in her presence.

Her insects sting and guilelessly bite

while Summer’s flower-perfumed essence

awakens and entreats our most intimate senses.

It would be so easy to love Summer. She puts us to the test

against Autumn, Winter and Spring as to whom we love best.

Summer has become a little too free for me.

I prefer a season who holds back her charms

and grants me shy glimpses which raise no alarms.

As Earth heats Summer’s gaze, subtlety fades  away.

Summer has become almost too bold,

too sure of her dominance, too unsafe

to simply play our Summers away.

FIXING THE DECK

Seasons change. Pandemics, too.

The same can be said for me and you.

We move about under a sunny sky

pretending all around us others do not die.

The deck carpet is covered in grime

from the years of corporate and political crime

committed by a party trapped in hate

wrapped in false flags that falsely state

women are are meant to be slaves

just as Black people, and all lesser knaves,

to their betters who wear red hats marked by lies,

under white robes hidden by suits and ties.

We try to clean the deck but the carpet is too worn

to survive another summer of overheated scorn.

The carpet has been removed to reveal

The rot beneath efforts to steal

not just an election but a nation.

Seeing the bare deck reveals the aberration

of rotten boards, installed by fraud and deceit

like judges and executives placed in lead seats.

Boards of all varieties falsely secured or not at all,

and easily shredded like their theories which call

for insurrection and destruction instead of restoration

of democracy and legal protections and right actions.

The deck is so undermined I fear it will fall.

No more summers in the sun with family and friends

until the rotted deck is replaced and Republicans make amends.

ON THE PLAYGROUND

Blistering heat on the soles of feet

bared to the earth.

Summer’s stories are foretold

by shoes left in the closet

as a deposit to pay

for fun in the sun on its way.

Summer is coming when running free

becomes a certainty for shoeless children

and adults like me eager to play.

Let us all run free

from bullets and tanks

from white supremacy

from loss of our humanity

from threats to women

and nursing-less children

from over-heated earth

and timing of births

from storms and fires

from the need to be admired

from fear and remorse

when we failed to stay the course.

Kick off your shoes.

Feel life’s reality.

Restore your sanity.

For today, simply play.
