THE NORTH WIND

Photo by Ben Muk on Pexels.com

A fierce wind blows hard and fast

across the tundra’s frozen mass

sliding down south furious and fast

like a feisty child on a slickened slide,

adult control no longer about,

tearing across a playground

with hearty shouts of glee –

I’m free! I’m free! I’m free!

It is a wondrous sight to see

bending, dancing trees in sway

holding tight squirrels’ nests

close to trees’ heaving chests.

The air is alive in ways we seldom see.

reminding us we, too, can be free.

We can cross the frozen, grieving miles

and dance again wreathed in smiles.

We can find a quickened pace

as wind lifts our feet into space

we once thought too weak to bear our weight.

Mother Nature reminds us of our place

in an ever-changing world whose race

to bring us safely round the sun,

with laughter, joy and fun

brings treasured moments of grace.

North wind reminds what we already know –

we….must…. just….let……….. go!

Over the pond

Where solemn lilies float free

Hangs the willow tree.

Sadly drooped willows

like sorrowful young widows

cry into the stream.

REMEMBER THE TREES

Photo by Johannes Plenio on Pexels.com

Never forget the trees.

Soon all we may have of them

are distant memories.

They seemed so stolid and secure,

able to bow but seldom break

in heavy winds, for centuries before

we all but ignored the earth

below and skies above

which clasped their roots

in iron bonds of love,

and watered them with gentled rains

formed in clouds of warmth

passing over frozen ice fields again

and again and again.

We have become uprooted as well.

The treasures of nations replaced

by campaigns of disinformation

to make us not pay attention

to earth’s disposable survival.

Lake Mead dries up

while Kentuckians and Pakistanis

flee to higher ground

and thousands hunger

for grains of  wheat and barley and rye.

Hunger and thirst are pandemic.

There is no real question why.

Only, why have we waited so long to try

to change our senseless

and destructive ways.

Remember the trees, and ocean’s waves,

and fields of red poppies and lavender,

and groves of olives and vines of grapes.

Remember the trees

on fire or drowning

as we soon may be.

Remember the trees.

The Trees and Me

I walked among the trees today.

Warm winds melted icy walkways .

Thus I could go again to see

Entire families of trees.

I must look quickly now

To know each trees unique bow

As Xylem floods from root to tip

as each sun beam nips and glows

And begins the nest where buds will grow.

I look now while I can still see

The naked truth that is each tree.

For once the leaves begin to grow

It’s truth is hidden far below.

I return home in reverie.

It is time to acknowledge the mystery

that has been my life before I go

beyond this forest of humanity.

I look at my mirrored image

As naked as the trees.

I see the creases and lines

Define the life I’ll leave behind.

Despite some days of bleakest sorrow

I yearn for many more tomorrows.

I will not easily decline any day

that fate decrees will come my way.

Like trees I bend rather than break.

I welcome the flood of xylem and phloem.

I choose more buds ready to grow

and more leaves to unfurl

before I go,

I may look old but am still a young girl.

Where I shall go

I do not know.

It is another mystery

contemplated in pews on bended knee,

or on stools in pubs with glasses raised.

Or while I walk among the trees.

Eating Trees,by Louise Annarino,1-22-2014

Trees tightly spun against the sky

encased in ice,

reflected light glows

on the leaves of pin oaks

like tangerine skins

glistening and scrumptious

making my mouth water

with hunger

for trees.
