THE SUPER-BOWL

One key contrast between Alex Pretti and Kristi Noem explains this ...

We live for the Super Bowl

after  limiting the outcome

to two teams.

Three brothers all played

on our high school team,

wounded warriors, it often seemed.

Cold presses on bruises

and after-game body soaks

became a game-night theme.

How did you get that bruise,

I often asked with due concern.

Sighing, they asked do you never learn?

No one likes to be on the bottom.

I was tackled when I caught the ball.

Then everyone piled on.

There are rules it seems in every game.

And who carries the ball

has a special name.

We cheer the ball carrier who gained the right

to run down the field, ball in hand;

headed for the goal-post to our delight.

Opposing teams and its followers never cheer.

They moan and groan and shout in anger,

sensing competition they cannot abide.

Watchers of the game have more swagger,

are more eager to throw weighted hammers

of hateful words and punches in the air.

Losers are the worst and soundly curse players.

They cannot play the game themselves.

and berate their own team’s players worst of all.

No one likes to be on the bottom of the pile.

It takes more effort to climb to the top.

Clawing, and shoving against pinching all the while.

The guy on the bottom has no chance

without a referee, or two, or three.

All rights lost when thrown to his knees.

More men pile on top to hold him in place

where they believe he belongs,

until he is able to fight his way free.

We watch and ask,

our hearts in our throats,

where are the referees?

Not on our city streets.

Nor in Congress, it seems.

America has become a nightmare,

killing the American Dream.

NO!

The strongest word in any language is “NO”.

It is every child’s first word for a reason.

To a toddler’s parent it is treason.

It carries more weight than cuddles or cudgels

used to reprimand, remand and reform.

Its power can overturn threats and intimidation.

Its shout can garner attention and create  doubt.

Its momentum can move mountains about.

Its clarity quickens response to its shame.

It calls attention to errors or cheats in any game.

It works where no other method succeeds

to enforce self-interest’s vitality and need.

Its surprise increases the ability to annoy.

“NO!” can be weakened if too late employed

Authoritarian rule is under attack

every time the word “NO!” is shouted back.

“No!” used in concert create symphonic dissent,

until the whole world rises to up-end

intimidation by armed and masked men

who invade our streets and use force to bend

our knees and our minds and our very lives.

When will such madness end ?

When more “NO” is heard than “yes”.

On such “NO!” does one’s freedom depend.

Every child knows this to be true.

Speak your “NO!” now before freedom is lost

to me, to all of us, even to you.

EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE

Photo by MART PRODUCTION on Pexels.com

How easily done depends

on the sinner and sin done that day.

No “ I lay me down to sleep”

before this Catholic child closed her eyes.

An examination of conscience,

a deep and complete review

of my sins committed that day, as I prayed

in true contrition for my sins; and a promise

to make restitution to all I had harmed

in my self-centered, humanly-corrupted way.

Only then, could forgiveness be petitioned

and God swayed. Sister told me so in class.

Father told me so in the dark confessional.

I await an examination of conscience by all

who voted for MAGA  entranced and enthralled

by promises of heavenly and earthly reward

for allowing hate to invade and invoke

the souls of nation recently made awoke

by African-Americans and women who showed

they were equally great to any American.

Make America Great Again only meant

make America white again.

And my church paved the way.

Her misogyny always ready to deprive

women of any control over

the length of their skirts,

the choice to love or escape

abuse in any man’s embrace,

manage their reproductive health,

choose or excuse another’s hate.

Abortion became the rallying cry

to bring sinners off their knees and to the polls

to vote for the liars who played priests like fools.

There is no place for judgment or blame.

Sinners all, we play the same game.

There is a need for an examination of conscience,

for restitution to a nation’s sacred tenets defamed

by such reckless, sincere but sinful moves.

Now, priests and pastors see the error of their ways

as they accompany immigrants to hearings

to protect them from MAGA misrule?

The MAGA the churches helped elect

is not a surprise. And, it remains a sin to be

examined deeply, and completely reviewed.

I await the results of such a self-examination.

I await the restitution to be completed.

I await the apology for distorting Christian theology.

I await the chance to forgive, wholeheartedly.

I know my church is only human.

If only it could remember that truth.
