DEFAMATION

Words can cut too close to the bone.

Words’ outside meaning fires the skin.

Words’ inside meaning, hidden from view

fires up hateful spew, just as true.

Words can cut too close to the bone.

splitting back the skin of what we have known.

Words open gaps to see within

what we have long hidden beneath our thin skins.

Words can make the blood flow strong,

too hard and too fast for too long.

Words flow beneath the marrow

to the depths of what we think we know.

Words pulse with their own beat

dancing through bodies to the soles of our feet.

Words leave bloody footprints to follow

until all blood is lost and our souls become hollow.

This is how words kill.

From outside in then out again

opening wounds we did not know

had crusted over wounds from long ago.

Words tear scars opening wounds anew

while ripping apart the peace we had found

to cure and to heal hate with love.

Words tell us love can never be true.

Words tell us love is not real;

if real, then, love is too weak to abide.

Words help us bury love so deep it subsides

and only hate can hold court inside.

Words boost false pride

that I am better than you.

I die inside as I try to kill the few

who speak the truth you once knew.

FORECAST ON FOUR COUNTS

Photo by Sora Shimazaki on Pexels.com

It won’t be enough.

I am sure.

Inconvenient facts are such a bore.

Unless…

and this is just a guess…

you love our country more;

and loving

opens the closed door

upon considering

what is in store

if justice is denied,

just to save your pride

and the story you tell to justify

the twists and turns

of so many lies.

One can only hope it is true

that we can count on you.

Your country needs you.

As do I

to keep the temperature down,

calm the storms,

and grow democracy

in rows just and orderly.

Freedom dies too easily

when weeds are allowed

to grow un-fact-checked.

The forecast tells us

four counts must be enough.

TESTIMONY OF HEROES?

Nice of you to stop by for a chat.

Heroes? I think not; although,

you would like us to believe it so.

Your ambition still rules my derision

for the complicit decisions

you made to keep in place

a criminal of such disgrace

he had to be impeached twice.

He is more than simply “not nice.”

And you stayed silent for more than four

years of actions deplored

by anyone with a care for humanity.

Sheer insanity was not his alone.

This is something you, too, own.

What if you had gone to the news

with all the facts you  knew ?

Would there have even been a coup?

The blame is not his alone.

It also falls on non-heroic you.

MEMORIAL DAY

Another morn to mourn,

turned celebration.

Will we one day celebrate

School Shooting Day ?

Or maybe NRA Day?

How can we play

on such a solemn day?

Shared memory is great

but a hot dog on a paper plate

should not take precedence

over remembrance

of what this day is for.

A day to study war no more

thanks to soldiers who gave

their all to their graves,

to save us from more days like this.

Today’s war goes unannounced

by fearful citizens who hate

the way they feel,

intimidated by the success

of those they thought to best.

So they don a Kevlar vest

and in camouflage dress

tote weapons of war

inside the door

of churches, synagogues, mosques,

schools, businesses, and grocery stores.

Name-calling as in any war

has become de riguer.

So-called Libtard Nazis who see no threat

in people of color, women and gender choice

are the latest gooks and towel heads.

War leaves a nasty taste in place

of citizenry and mutual respect.

So-called patriots ignorant of our history

ignore the blood of our honored dead

buried in poppied fields or unknown tombs.

They fight for white supremacy instead

of a country dedicated to the proposition

all men are created equal

as its starting position.

They seek to stop the race

to a more perfect union

by destroying the communion

of patriots future and past.

How long will such travesty last?

DIMMING DEMOCRACY

Personal integrity holds power

hour after hour,

a self-charging battery

which needs no flattery.

Its lack weakens the energy

of those out of charity,

whose vision holds no clarity

of truth over lies.

Whose only means of holding power

is what autocrats allow

as they are charged to follow

and democracy dies.

NO REST in a NIGHTMARE

The dream that is America

died during the night.

The right to vote

and have that vote count

was gone with the dawn.

While I was sleeping

Lady Liberty lay weeping

at the second insurrection

which eroded the protection

of the democracy

we rely upon.

Democracy was killed in dark of night,

the moon’s reflected light

not strong enough

to stop the rape

of her freedoms.

We awaken worn and weary

from brittle dreams

to a new reality

forged in heated nightmares.

Dreams fade over time.

Nightmares hang on.

How long before we forget

the dream that was America?

Rest In Peace, Lady Liberty.

I cannot.
