GARDEN OF LIFE

Photo by Nicolas Panetta on Pexels.com To deter a young skunk roaming my yard at night, looking for new den and intimidating and spraying tiny dog of my neighbor, I placed twinkling multi-colored solar lights low across the border of her fences, my patio and my garden beds and my yard perimeter, pulsing at variable rates. Since then, no rabbits, skunks, or racoons have been chomping on my plants. The dog is safe when my neighbor lets him out to do his business. It is Christmas in our backyards until the unwanted critters return to their dens.November cannot come soon enough.

The pulse of life beats strong,

beset by all that is wrong.

Animals prey in the yard at night,

entering as we lose the light,

to eat the crops and uproot the flowers,

creating destruction hour by hour.

Every effort seems for naught.

Undermining all we’ve been taught.

No respect for decades of effort

to create a safe space for all who enter,

a space free of willfulness, woes and want;

a space where  diversity and beauty abound,

where seeds breed and reseed in dark ground

so readily that we forget the dangers around

every corner, and under every rock.

It is imperative to finally take stock.

To pay attention to those lurking in the dark.

To those who would steal our garden’s wealth

with deceit, lies and stealth.

Single spotlights, motion sensors for lights,

individual porch lights and flashlights

have not been enough to stop the raccoons and skunks.

The unseen predators who hide beneath

that which bloomed from our labors,

until we finally notice what has been lost.

We cannot count the cost

although we desperately try.

Our pulse beats strong as we cry.

I think we have found a solution

to the critters who invade like pollution,

unsightly, unseen, willingly mean.

Faerie lights of all colors with patternless pulse

strung throughout the yard, across every row

where our treasured plants grow

threatening with uncertainty those who prey

as dark nights take over our days.

On at dusk, off at first light.

We have finally set our garden aright.

The pulse of life beats strong

with each push of the button on voting machines

the faerie lights come on.

No need for the KKK.

No need for Nazis.

No need for MAGA.

No need for a Tea Party.

Not today.

Pump T not into the harbor,

but into young white men.

Into a military cleared of women,

people of color, and gays.

Young men who joined to serve

in a citizen army meant to save

peoples’ freedoms and the aspirations

of a constitutionally protected nation.

Instead, testosterone infusions

will create such confusion

and a masculinity

straining their humanity

with drugged brutality;

an aggression pumped up in display,

ordered now to act in a way

that serves the few leaders,

not the nation nor its citizens.

Leaders who will not allow soldiers

to show their humanity.

Soldiers drugged to match their leaders’ insanity.

Soldiers sent to control elections.

Soldiers whose protections

are meant only for the wealthy con men

who cheat and steal from honest men and women

working too many jobs to pay attention

to leaders’ lies and disaffection

for principles soldiers were meant to offer protection.

No checks and balances on insanity.

No effort to save our humanity.

First, we must protect our soldiers.

Only then, can we protect ourselves.

EULOGY

God-speed dear Jesse

on your latest journey

where you may take your rest.

You always did your best.

You always helped us see

racism has no place in a democracy.

You mentored us along our way

on separate paths that lay

alongside your own by right,

allies in a long, broad fight

to make America, finally, act right.

You encouraged us to face the foes

who would take us all down,

with fisticuffs and handcuffs, to the ground.

You showed us that peaceful means

are more than enough

to overcome those who act so tough.

God speed, dear Jesse,

Good riddance, Kristi, and all your kind.

Jesse’s spirit will survive those of your mind.

Jesse’s peaceful rainbow coalition

is far more able, resolute and tough.

Sure enough. Sure enough.

WINDS OF CHANGE

Photo by cottonbro studio on Pexels.com

Drifting on winds of change is a lost art,

In gaelstorm winds upending calm;

Until we are lost amid unknown storms

No longer just our own.

WARNING SIGNS

Photo by RDNE Stock project on Pexels.com

Is it possible

for three hearts to beat

within one body?

One full of love and joy

for every creature,

every life form?

One full of sorrow

of what tomorrow

will likely unfold?

One full of anger

and a rage so profound

a heart breaks in pieces?

Oh, now I see.

I have but one heart

being torn asunder.

I am no longer in doubt.

I am no longer unsure.

I am no longer whole.
