SPEAKING CREATION

What is now does not have to be.

Speaking up is an act of creation

in this a darkening and frightening nation.

Speaking out is creativity as life may be.

In this way we are always free

to see the world much differently

than when we are told to bend our knee.

It need never be what others see.

We can create our own reality.

The act of creation is the greatest act of love,

overcoming destruction from above.

Speaking out lifts not only voices;

but lifts unlimited possibilities and choices.

Those who try to close the gates

and scare us with threats of hate

to block us in and push us down

cannot handle creativity’s frown

upended when we discover

that we can create a world of lovers.

Speak up. Speak out. Speak so loud

creators join and form a crowd

that laughs in the face of hate and greed

and creates a new and loving creed.

Speaking out is an act of creation.

Speaking out will form a new nation

conceived in liberty

and dedicated to the proposition

that no one can force us to take their position.

THE LIGHT WE REFUSE TO SEE

Photo by cottonbro studio on Pexels.com

I used to believe Truth lived in the shadows.

If only we could shine enough light,

then Truth would be set free

for all to see.

There are those who prefer we stay in the dark,

it is true. They fear the Light will open our eyes.

It is no longer so easy to darken the streets

upon which we set our feet

hoping to reach a place of greater liberty.

Truth speeds around the world

from one shadowed place to the next.

Through media Truth moves at the speed of light.

Truth seekers use facts to light our way

along the path to a new day,

one where Light holds sway.

The darkness can no longer hide Truth in shadow.

Those who live in the dark side of life

create new truths able to live in false Light.

In their constant retelling of lies

Truth simply dies in plain sight.

The battle between the Light and the Dark,

between Truth and Lies

is now exposed in MAGA prose

stealing the limelight with false praise

for oligarchs, autocrats and murderers

whose only goal is to control

the flow of wealth into their own pockets

while those who work to be whole

starve and struggle at their feet.

Those forced to  flee and seek amnesty as refugees

would add their story to our own

brightening the Truth we already know.

The telling would not surprise the homeless

who walk our own streets.

The homeless, like Truth, used to hide in shadow.

We try to keep them there so we cannot see

the borders they have crossed.

Truth and Light and Love are all apiece.

Without Love we are blind and refuse to seeTruth.

There is no Light strong enough to overcome

deliberate blindness cushioned by lies.

We allow them in boardrooms, newsrooms,

hearing rooms and even, courtrooms.

“Speak Truth to Power,” isn’t that what we say?

When Power seizes the Light with falsehood

can we not see that False Light

can never be allowed to hold sway?

True Light is always more powerful than false.

Liars know this and ban books, and oppose

all who stand alight within Truth’s glow.

This is the one thing I still know.

VOTE BLUE

Politics well-played avoids wars.

Games require referees not on-the-take,

and rules to establish guidelines

to mark the true scores.

Even Monopoly puts wrongdoers in jail,

and cheaters lose turns to correct

false places on the board.

Poker often leads by bluffs

But stacking the deck is deplored.

Republicans no longer play politics well.

They pay off the refs and announcer in the box,

Unilaterally re-design the track

and put burrs under saddles

To fix the race they brazenly run

with no thought to the damage done;

not only to their opponents,

but to the chance to keep the game fun.

Instead, they ruin any chance to avoid

the wars and disasters sure to come.

Vote Democratic, everyone!

It is the only way our republic can last

So we can all join in and play

fair and square another day.

WOMEN

Women are a sisterhood of might,

warriors with truth in sight

who love with lust and passion

and in ecstasy’s delight.

Women are the robins of the nests,

nurturers warming all within their light

who love with care and comfort

and in blossoming insight.

Women are the lions in dark night,

protectors with fierce might

who love with strength and power

and guarantee our rights.

POETIC POWER

Photo by Suzy Hazelwood on Pexels.com

Poems are carrots in front of the nose,

meant to stir the desire to go

by horses so attune to the reins

they have forgotten how to trot

down the lane

on their own.

Poems are a kick in the rump

meant to raise to action

those sitting on the fence

prone to inaction

when what they need

is a sense of dissatisfaction.

Poems are mere words

until they are not

to those who feel their power

and find themselves caught

in new ways of seeing

and thinking

and feeling.

DIMMING DEMOCRACY

Personal integrity holds power

hour after hour,

a self-charging battery

which needs no flattery.

Its lack weakens the energy

of those out of charity,

whose vision holds no clarity

of truth over lies.

Whose only means of holding power

is what autocrats allow

as they are charged to follow

and democracy dies.

RESURRECTION

Whom shall rise from the dead this day ?

The victims of gunfire in American alleys and streets?

Children caught in the crossfire?

Black men shot in the head for license tag violations?

Ukrainians tortured in basements by Russian troops?

Somalis, Ethiopians, and  Sudanese starving to death?

On this day when Christians celebrate Christ’s Resurrection

I pray for a resurrection of insurrection

against greed and usurped people’s power

that breeds gunplay and famine,

rape and suppression of women,

redistricting and election misdirection,

racism and gender disaffection

of human rights.

I celebrate resurrection and contemplate

what still needs our attention.

I hope for more in my Easter basket

than bodies dumped in caskets.

I search for more answers to hatred

while children search for more eggs.

Like the children, I hope to find

what I am looking for;

peace and equity, life and security,

a sacred response to all in need,

an Amen.

HOPE STREET

Where does hope begin or end?

Hope is not a one-way street, I know.

Hope folds back upon itself and those

who travel its streets come and go.

Hope gets caught up in the dark fold

and holds its breath until the street unfolds

where freedom lights and warms the soul

and breath can find its rhythm again.

Wins and losses racing down these streets

means little on this stretch where war has taken hold.

the streets of Harkiv, Cherniv, Chernobyl,

Kyiv, Lviv, and Mariupol and the many towns

and villages along the way show us hope

passed this way on its way to war and back again.

Bodies lying twisted on Ukrainian streets

executed and abandoned show hope passed through

on its way to our own streets, to our own end.

Hope folds back again and again and again

until our streets meet Ukrainian streets,

util our humanity meets in the streets everywhere,

until we discover all streets meet end-to-end.

Our hopes fold and unfold together on the road

to war and peace, to evil or good, to hatred or love.

Where does hope begin or end?

With each of us.

BRAVE ACTS

Brave acts brave histories make

of men and women, and nations

united untidily, unrepentantly

but bravely.

Too seldom we see such as this

in nations guided by bliss

following trade’s path

toward profit and math.

Adding up cash into power is not bad.

What one does with such power can be

if labor and neighbor are pushed into slavery

because leaders lack bravery.

Ukraine is but a symptom of harm

long passed on to the poor and powerless

in whatever nation they reside.

We need more bravery and fairness

and less cowardice

before we move on

to tomorrow’s news.

Weak Cores

Saving face

By creating truth

Is the only means of escape

From harsh reality

For those whose core

Is thinned and weak

By lack of moral exercise.

Bread and circuse

Did Rome in.

History ignored

Is repeated evermore.

Distraction through attraction

Diverts the gaze, the ear, the tongue.

This is who we live among.

Doing what is correct

Does not reflect the Right

Constantly claiming false

It’s moral might

Over those whose outrage

Threatens their control,

Their wealth, their privilege.

New faces in new places

Where they were not allowed before

Distort the world view

Of the autocratic few.

It takes strong core

Muscles to stand tall

Before the attack of falsehood

Destroys us all.
