SEARCHING MAR-a-LAGO
What will seized papers show
of secrets only a few could know?
Would Russia have invadedUkraine
for what President Trump thought to gain
if he served President Zelensky on a golden plate?
That is his way, as we all know,
never enough gold his greed to satiate.
What cabal operated amidst the Oval Office din
across Foggy Bottom from Russia then back again?
What criminal enterprises are hidden in the folds
of papers boxed away in Mar-a-Lago?
The “Right to Know” answers to such questions
Is the National Archives most sacred treasure,
and the people must know every measure
of every step taken at government’s direction.
Archives exist for our most basic protection
as a free people in a free nation.

WORLD WAR AGAINST DEMOCRACY
Putin is winning his war against America
even as he loses in Ukraine.
Tucker Carlson, FOX News
and the Freedom Caucus
of The US Congress
plight their troth to Putin’s cause
while their citizen supporters
cheer Putin on to defeat
not only Democrats and the Democratic Party
but democracy itself.
Americans focus on the war abroad
where Ukrainians who refuse to be conned
by Trump and his MAGA cons
fight for their freedom.
The war here at home rages on.
Putin wins without a shot,
funding the NRA and lobbyists instead,
for guns to wage war on our children
gunned down in city streets.
Drugs fund his efforts and continue
the blight of Putin’s fight
in every city in every neighborhood.
The World War is hidden behind
institutions meant to guard freedom.
But when they do, Putin’s army
of the American right takes flight
and drops word bombs
to destroy the weapons reason wields.
Americans must take to the fields
to defend SCOTUS appointments,
election officials and elections themselves.
the Republican Freedom Congress raises funds
and pledges support to candidates
who will tunnel inside the only defenses we still have
to defeat the enemies of our democracy.
The Russian War in Ukraine is one of many fronts.
The war is worldwide. It has already begun.

The night is a thief

Forget the truth is a lie
When stated outright
In broad daylight.
Forget the con is a blight
When played out
In plain sight.
Moving the thimbles
Hiding the blight
Is thievery.

To make it all right.

City on a Hill Of Death
How many deaths lie at the feet
Of a man of complete
lies and depravity?
Can any human conceive
men who lack all humanity?
The Emperor Wore No Clothes
but, only the child could see
through the pomposity
to the naked truth
that we cannot trust
ourselves.
If we cannot trust ourselves,
then whom can we trust?
This is the basis of democracy.
Every vote must count.
The young ones shout it out
above the crowd of those who doubt
and wither, while justice dithers.
Have we forgotten the lessons
if middle class construction
which formed the base
of The City On The Hill,
under which the bones of slaves
are buried?
Time to Build Back Better
and bury the depraved instead.

OUT OF THE PIT
OUT OF THE PIT

We yearn to turn corners
while we burn
for familiar faces
and easy spaces
where change is paced
and we can remain sedate.
But, transformation
of a dying nation,
shaken to its foundation
can never feel safe
by standing in place,
while violence and fear
obscure all we hold dear.
Using both brains and brawn
we must soldier on
crossing boundaries beyond
those we set long before the big con,
like filibusters and indictments
of former president’s incitements;
until our path is no longer blocked
by those who should be locked
up.
Up, look up!
It is the only way to climb out of the pit.
Climb, even though Republicans sit
on their hands, hands out for any bit
of coin, or power, unwilling to admit
failure. They only look down, sit down,
lock down the march to save the crown
jewel that is the republic where world-wide freedom is sown.
This is not the time to count the cost
of what it takes to regain what we have lost.
Up! Up! Look up!

MAKING WAR AGAINST DEMOCRATIC MAYORS: ANOTHER GEORGE III ?
In the late 1760s and 17770s the British Parliament and George III, King of England pursued a policy of “law and order” in the cities of his colony, America. When a group of unruly colonials who had been protesting unequal treatment as British citizens and dumped a shipload of tea into Boston Harbor, the loss of fortune angered him so that he sent British troops to Boston and closed Boston Harbor. The harsh treatment by British troops escalated tensions. further, leading to more unrest. He began confiscating their weapons and arresting the protest leaders. This infuriated the colonials and the march to Lexington and Concord to subdue Massachusetts colonists led to “the shot heard round the world” (Ralph Waldo Emerson).
We have president who believes he has unlimited powers of a monarch or despotic leader. A president who follows the lead of authoritarians of Russia, N. Korea, and China. His “best friends” and “very strong leaders” and “briliant” people. We have a president who does not recognize the freedoms assured our citizens under our Constitution. We have a president whose only interest is in consolidation and retention of his power as president, supported by a Republican Party with the same goal.
And now, he threatens war against cities led by Democratic Mayors. Republicans allow him to attack their political opposition, the Democratic Party. In Georgia, with Republican governor at the helm, a Republican governor has sued the Mayor after she mandated masks. She followed CDC and WHO guidelines, to save the lives of Atlanta residents she has sworn to protect from the covid pandemic rampaging her community. In Portland, lacking local Republican leadership, our George III sent in camouflaged secret police, using them as a private army, to enforce his will, and suppress the citizens protesting racist and unequal treatment as our colonial ancestors did in 1770s.
In response to King Georg III and the British Parliament Thomas Paine wrote a pamphlet titled COMMON SENSE in which he rejected the monarchy and called George III a “royal brute.” He argued that the colonials create an American Republic, a state without a king. And they did. The new country’s political philosophy, as defined by Thomas Paine and enshrined in our Constitution and laws holds that elected representatives, not a monarch, should govern the ship of state. Citizens decide who governs them, and decide other issues, on the basis of majority rule. And perhaps most importantly, Paine’s theory of “republicanism” demanded adherence to a “code of virtue” which became a guiding principle of the patriots/protesters conduct. This concept of adherence to a code of conduct established the norms of government, and its purpose was to establish a common good for all those living in the new republic.
The Republican Party in leadership today, and the president/despot they support, refuse to adhere to the code of conduct and norms adopted by our founding fathers. They jeer when a Democratic Senators, Congresspersons,Governors or Mayors adhere to the code. They shame citizen protester/patriots who insist upon the code and the promised freedoms of our Constitution, using words like the profane “libtards”.
We have a president and Republican leadership which creates chaos and then implements “law and order” strategy to suppress the opposition in the streets of our cities, and to suppress the vote of its political opposition. Just as the British Parliament supporting GeorgeIII did so long ago.

Time to Grow UP
AMERICA’S TEEN YEARS ARE OVER

In 1978, as Columbus Legal Aid Society staff attorney, I had a client who had traveled to the Nebraska Territory as a 5 year old, her bare feet dangling over the back edge of the Conestoga wagon. As she was making her way west with her family, my Italian immigrant grandparents were being processed through Ellis Island. The timing of these events seemed to my young mind to be in the ancient past. These were events I had studied in history books. Interviewing my client that day affirmed what I had also been taught in history class – America is a young nation.
Over the years, I have often had to remind myself that young countries, like young people are often impetuous, misguided, unable to imagine a future where they are not the center of everyone’s universe. As we age we realize we are but a small part of the whole, no one is really paying any attention to us, and we need to think before acting to avoid mistakes. Young people are the gods of instant gratification. Older people are surprised whenever they have reason to feel gratified. Accepting less than what one hoped for is all too commonplace. Okay replaces great, good replaces perfect in the vocabulary of the mature.
Tall tales are told by every age group; but,the young are more likely to believe them. Ad agencies, abetted by entertainment-focused news media have institutionalized tall-tale telling in America. And America is still young enough, naive enough, and gullible enough to believe what it reads, sees, and hears. We chide the ancient Greeks, Italians and Vikings for their ancient wisdom urging them to act like the teenagers we act like. Teens assume everyone is the same, and hide any unique characteristic which would set them apart from their friends. They travel in packs, alert for any opportunity to enhance their stature or wealth, with the least amount of effort and few accomplishments to justify it.
Maybe it is time America grew up. Maybe it is time we only reward those who contribute to the common good and the survival of America. Maybe it is time to realize we are not infallible and admit when we make mistakes. Maybe it is time to accept those civilizations which survive are those which have something positive to offer the world: art, music, freedom, education, compassion, wisdom, openness to the gifts of other nations.
Maybe it is time we grew up. Maybe it is time to see bravado and war-mongering as a sign of fear and weakness. Maybe it is time to see stereotypes and discrimination as a lack of imagination and knowledge. Maybe it is time to see distorting truth and manipulating economic markets for private gain over public good as greed and piracy.
Mature nations and mature people know themselves well, take time to learn others well, remain true to reality, understand life is difficult and complex, make decisions calmly and with the input of those more knowledgeable than themselves, can cooperate and assimilate, mediate and confront with more light than heat. Mature persons reserve their strength, their opinion, their actions for the greatest impact. Mature persons are other-centered, not me-centered. A mature person would not associate with a buffoon-ignoramus-racist, going to the lowest level of American politics to win the presidency.1
I do not intend to vote for a teenager. I shall vote for the adult in the room, President Barack Obama. His leadership during his first term has been measured and mature, focused and decisive, cooperative and comfortably confrontive. America is now a mature player on the world stage; steady and dependable, self-assured and polite, strong and supportive of a more mature and peaceful world. Neither America nor President Obama are perfect; but, they are good. They are very good!
