FIND THE WORDS 12/27/2021
Sometimes there is nothing more to be said.
Words lie too pale
to leave a trail
on the page
for others to follow.
Thoughts are too hollow
to offer comfort or recourse;
too shallow
to ease pain and remorse.
One step at a time.
One word at a time.
One breath at a time.
One sigh at a time.
Not enough words to rhyme
nor steps to mind.
We falter and fail
hands gripped to the rail
too frail to climb up,
too weary to climb down. Undecided too long.
Afraid to be wrong.
How can we build back better lacking blocks to build letters
to forms words to create stories,
to restore narratives of glory?

Reset the game
we are determined to play.
Reset the rules

and restore the ante fools

have laid bare,
offering nothing but a prayer.
A prayer without words.
Find the words!

Tell the story!

Variation on the Theme

Is this how the world ends?

of violent means,

and a virus that portends

With a scream

ever-changing threats

to those ill used or well.

How can we tell?

We cannot.

We must not.

Instead,

Our story must be

how we overcame

with a love untamed

by fear or dread

as we bury our dead.

Too much change.

Too fast.

Too many lost

to count the cost.

October

October winds clear the skies

Of sleep about the eyes,

Snoozing in the last heat

Of summer daze.

Awakened by her cold touch

On heated skin,

Alarmed and shaken,

She stretches out

Our dreams of summer.

October takes no hostages.

She is honest and direct.

She makes no effort

To lull us back to sleep.

Despite the long nights

And short days,

Or because of them,

We must remain alert.

Winter nears.

Disinformation

Aphorisms can be useful tools

When put to use to fix

the broken places .

But when worn in a belt

Around the wasted space

They merely hold us down.

“Look at the glass half-empty

But see it half -full“

Does not change its contents.

A glass filled with lies

Is still poison

To the soul.

Before raising the glass

In toast to the past,

first fill it with truth.

Night Pears

Where pigs fly

And trees walk

The earth churns

And dreams unfold

As nightmares.

What we know as truth

Unravels whole cloth

And comes undone

Baring our naked fears

As nightmares.

And thus, I dream of pears

And manchego cheese

Sliced by the knife of fear

Lower than the gut

Of mankind’s survival.

Foggy Thinking

Hiding the details,

heavy mists rise from over-heated earth

thus, we cannot see.

Sun Shadows

Frosted windowpanes of ice

Grab the heart

Twisting into thought

All we thought

We knew

Of civility

Of compassion

Of wisdom

To protect

A beloved country.

We need a slow warmth

Too

Much

Heat

Too

Fast

And all will shatter.

Sun shadows

Are all we can afford

For now.

Times Three Equals Zero

Three times the weight

Of a closed door

Is enough to stop passage.

Three times the height

Of a ladder against the roof

Is enough to stop the climb.

Three times the width

Of a bag of mulch

Is enough to lose the grip.

Three times the depth

Of the sea bottom

Is enough to stop the free dive.

They need not tell us we cannot

Open the door,

Climb the ladder,

Lift the bag,

Dive into the sea.

They just need to make it so difficult

We can no longer

Even try.

SOUL KILLER

If ever

I let you lie

to me

I shall die.

Oh?

Not stop breathing.

You will not see

a corpse,

only a dead soul.

Dead to what is real

life.

Alive to what does not

exist.

No life.

No existence.

I shall need more lies

as sustenance,

food for a dead soul.

I shall have lost

my appetite

for truth.

Nothing beautiful

could grow,

could become more,

could inspire

life around me.

I would no longer be

part of reality.

So stop!

Just stop lying.

You are killing more than

the unvaccinated.

You are killing

my soul.

THE EDGE OF TIME

THE EDGE OF TIME
Louise Annarino
April 18,2020

No one knows what day it is
anymore.
Time drifts past exit ramps
and leads us
into the unknown,
while fearsome animals lurk
on city streets
left vacant too long.
Just long enough
to remind us of a long distant past
when the sun shone
clear and unencumbered
by exhaust fumes
and coal ash.
Exhausted by its weight
time pushes us down
where we can no longer damage
the very air
so many now struggle to breathe.
Breathe! Breathe!
Breathe this clean air!
Unembraceable by another soul
embrace the air and water and soil
as if it were your mother.
Remember her for she has
not forgotten you.
At the edge of time
we discover
our family is much larger
than we remember.
When we pull back from the edge
will we forget?
