HIDDEN SPRING

Photo by Marcio Konno on Pexels.com

What do the Earth and her creatures know

which we do not know?

Are our hopes too high, too soon

even as the green grass grows

and trees unfurl leaves

that shelter all from heat and sun?

The squirrels still seldom leave their nests.

The rabbits yet burrow beneath the shed.

The disquiet of too quiet daybreak

without birdsong warbling to wake

all the creatures eager to begin

days of freedom without and within.

Why do the creatures continue to hide

in shelters away from prying eyes?

Where are the bees

as the flowers bud and bloom?

Why such a quiet garden devoid of all sound?

Is it too soon to expect, Earth’s creatures

and I, our freedom to rebound?

Or, should we find our peace

by staying underground?

In the silence, I walk carrying dreams

instead of shutting them down in dawn’s light.

Dreams cannot stay hidden by night

after the sun reappears in the sky.

Earth and its creatures may stay hidden;

but not my dreams of Spring. Not I, not I.

I move through the garden,

my eyes searching wide

for other creatures, unwilling to hide.

Place your shoes under the bed.

Where you go in your dreams

Is best walked barefoot.

Feel the surface you trod, hard or soft,

Rough or smooth,

Hot or cold.

Learn the truth, grounded and sure

So lies cannot find you unaware,

Unready, unable to discern

The truth you need to know

To find your way on ground that is real

And leads to the place you need to go.

A place you neither want nor expect

But need to be. The temple of honesty.

Barefoot. Grounded. Free.

RISE UP

Photo by James Collington on Pexels.com

Early morning risers are a breed apart.

They insist upon rising in the dark.

Their tattered dreams soon forgotten

they move to uncover windows;

not to simply let in the coming light

but, to first, acknowledge the night.

Darkness holds little mystery

to those who accept the misery

of what they watched unfold the day before,

and to believe the new day’s light will restore

balance, fairness, wisdom, hope and more.

Surely, the sun will shine on goodness

and love will once more rise with sun’s rays?

Such hopes can only be born in the dark.

Once sun rises and bathes us in her light

we forget the need for change we felt,

we hungered for, we fought for through the night.

Like babes in dark wombs we struggle to alight.

We yearn to be free of darkness and held tight.

Such memories of those first moments

are waiting to be born now in this morn’s sunlight.

Those who wake and walk in darkness know,

once more of us awake, all can soon be set aright.

DAWNING

Photo by Johannes Plenio on Pexels.com

I have been carried over mountains

dredged in gold

by sunlight’s curve of light

as dawn unfolds

and opens her arms,

and gently releases her hold

on earth’s many charms.

The wonders of my world shift

within my sights

in bits and pieces set adrift

until I string them together like jewels

to hang around my neck

and light the darkest days ahead.

Indeed, dawn’s delights

can lighten even the darkest nights

in waking dreams sensing the coming light.

Dawn works her tentative way

across this bleak space every day.

Dawn awakens an eagerness to find my place

among other beings also lit from within.

Together, we can light the entire world.

It is dawn. We have dawned.

It is time to begin.

NIGHT TERRORS

Night closes in

tightfisted, grasping,

leaking tears from the sky

mingled with snow,

cold and deadening

of all senses, and all sense.

until we are afraid to let go.

At this hour dawn seems too far away

to make any difference at all.

Too much can happen while held tight

in night’s eerie thrall;

and bound thus, body carefully trussed,

will-power to overcome threats

has no power at all.

Words cannot fully replace fear

as unexpected threats draw near,

in dreams stuffed as pillows

embroidered by past ill deeds

viewed on media screens.

Knowing even worse lies ahead

who could remain in  bed?

It used to be we welcomed each new day.

Now, we stretch out night’s hours

to avoid awakening too soon

to hear the new day’s notice of doom

spewed by text and on X

all night through.

Hate will soon raise its head, right on cue.

KILL THEM ALL?

Fraud plot in which some Somali immigrants participated? All Somalis are garbage so get rid of them all.

Criminal activity in which some African-Americans engage? All African-Americans are garbage. Get rid of them all.

Investigations and questions by journalists you find troublesome? All journalists are garbage. Get rid of them all.

Some women refuse your advances and sexism? All women are garbage. Get rid of them all.

Venezuelan boaters survive an illegal attack at sea? All Venezuelans are garbage. Get rid of them all.

Democrats pass legislation restricting corporate greed? All Democrats are garbage. Get rid of them all.

Military heroes remind military personnel to refuse unlawful orders? All military and veterans are garbage. Get rid of them all.

CEOs defraud, overcharge for goods and services, underpay workers? All CEOs are garbage. Get rid of them all.

Some White people commit crimes? All white people are garbage. Get rid of them all.

Some men abuse and rape women? All men are garbage. Get rid of them all.

Some bankers hide criminal gains, make money off the deposits? All bankers are garbage. Get rid of them all.

Hate has no logic except its power to destroy.

Hate has no reason except its delight in abuse.

Hate has no goodness in thought or in deed.

Hate is a damning influence and creed.

Hate is the one thing no one needs.

Some people hate? All people are garbage. Get rid of them all.

Hate until no one is left alive, no one at all.

A NEW DAWN

Photo by Ali Naderi on Pexels.com

Even the pictures on the wall

are tilted to the right.

Was there another disturbance overnight?

A tweet, and email, a deep-meet out of sight?

Did I stay asleep to avoid another fright?

When dawn came to anew and renew me

I woke to the strengthening light.

I straightened every picture on every wall.

Was all this only a nightmarish dream after all?

I suddenly feel stronger, the longer I recall

what the world looked like before America’s fall.

Once again, I vow, Americans will be able to stand tall.

LEAD WITH THE HEART

Lead with the heart

and the mind will follow

a path of peace and hope,

strong enough to carry

dreams and generosity

for all those you meet.

No matter how difficult

the journey it will not be taken

alone, silently, fearfully.

The heart knows best what matters.

The heart knows the best path.

The heart unites us joyfully.

The heart beats life determinedly.

The heart overcomes strife.

Lead with the heart and do your part

to create a world worth living.

Some paths are famous and large.

Some paths are unrecognized and small.

Every path matters to those

who walk it and make it their own.

Every path converges as we move

into the great unknown.

INSOMNIA

Sleep catches me unaware

Reading in my chair.

A loud noise as a commercial airs

Awakens me from nightmares.

No, it is the news that intrudes

On waking dreams sharp and crude.

I have been awake more than I knew

Unable to tell what is untrue or true.

And so, I read some more

Of an entire reality to explore.

I try hard to understand and accept

A new reality in a democracy kept

Captive without due process of law

Which exposes all of our flaws.

Racism breathes deep and still

With a long-ignored strong will.

We too easily pretend

it has nothing to do with us, my friend.

Lie once and it becomes then

easier to lie again and again.

And we have lied for centuries now.

Shame beads sweat on every brow.

Cognitive dissonance

Makes us create distance

From truth, facts and connection.

Shamelessness offers protection.

Too many are willing to deny

What is clear to the clear-eyed.

I see no end in sight

And remain sleepless night after night.

DREAM OF MY SELF

Photo by Eva Bronzini on Pexels.com

In dreams we are known

in ways we can’t know ourselves.

Keep dreaming, my soul.
