TAGLINES

Photo by Wesley Davi on Pexels.com

My dreams have taglines; colored lights forming words,

scrolling across the bottom or the top

to awaken a sleeping brain.

Sometimes, bold sentences

within thick-lined boxes to draw attention.

My tired body sometimes fails to notice or understand

the insights my vivid dreams demand.

As I dreamt last night and viewed my last scenes

a box appeared with a message to be gleaned:

TO GO FORWARD IT IS OFTEN BEST TO LOOK TO THE PAST

WHERE YOU HAVE BEEN BEFORE.

And, then, I awoke to my here and unformed now

wondering what part of past

informs a future built to last.

Dreams leave clues like any good mystery.

Dreams fragment history.

Dream introduce me to strangers

who tell their stories, and not my own.

I wake confused yet excited to explore

the fading dream some more.

I turn on lights to brighten the dark morning,

awaiting a breathless sunrise

to seep beneath shades hiding the night,

which might bring surprises to my door.

It is difficult to see a future

when these days are so dark.

Dreams tell me to see clearly

my future relies upon seeing my past.

I search each dark corner

with a flashlight in my hand.

If I can see what brought me here,

where I now wonderingly stand,

I can see a future brighter than indignation,

more solid than fearful imagination.

A future where strangers’ stories become my own,

and I can grow from seeds I have sown

in the dark soil, now,

so well known.

HOLY HOURS

Photo by Aditya Oberai on Pexels.com

Hours are not carried by Time.

Hours carry Time, and define

the meaning of each minute

night and day.

In wakefulness or sleep

Hours are mine.

Holy Hour is the time I pray

before the sacred Host of Immortality,

Grace enters with great mystery.

Indecent Hours get in the way of wakefulness

with sleepless nights, and dreams, in play.

Make every minute count, wise women say.

Hours mount their weight day by day.

Their heaviness brings down clocks, yet chimes

that days left are too few; I shall soon be out of time.

Make haste to use each Hour with a smile.

the time we have left used well makes life worthwhile.

Hours do not carry us into unfilled Time to waste.

We carry Hours like a weight to remind us to make haste.

Hours are not carried by Time.

We carry Hours. We carry Time.

Every minute of every Hour is mine.

MORNINGS

Photo by SHVETS production on Pexels.com

Is the first awakening any better than the last?

Or must we always yearn for what is past?

The sun breaks open the darkness we are closed within.

Even in darkness our light is never dimmed.

Must we compete, then with the light we face at dawn?

Must we shine brighter, hotter, higher, hour after hour

until exhaustion overtakes our effort to shine divine?

Finally, darkness comes to embrace us, calm us, take us

where we may dream of what will be, what was, what is.

Is the first awakening any better than the last?

Will the next awakening be even better than those past?
