PAVED ROADS

Station Road rebuilding 2 by Jonathan Wilkins is licensed under CC-BY-SA 2.0

The road to success is paved with cash.

Numbers add up with each step.

Roads are blown to dust

when there is no money to keep them up.

Campaigns are long roads in America.

The longer the road, the higher the cost.

Those who run races along America’s roadways

are not so fleet-footed as they appear.

Their feet often slide on cash piled too high.

Their feet often slow on cash piled too low.

Whenever you wonder “why”, follow the money,

its ebb and flow, its surrogate paths

to hide those in the know.

Senators and Congressmen cannot always follow

the path of a lead runner when the cash is low.

They find new paths where money will cushion

a challenging and uphill election or re-election.

Still wondering “why?” And who decides?

Ask the right questions. Swallow your pride.

Then you will know. You are along for a ride.

POLITICAL PARTIES

Photo by cottonbro studio on Pexels.com

Notes do not always ascend

in a crescendo of delight

They also bend low

beyond the heart’s swift beat

until we feel breath stop

fearing heart’s defeat.

Notes ebb and flow

in patterns we do not anticipate.

Yet the music goes on

in beauteous escapade

across unlit rooms,

across shady glens,

across sunlit fields

and parking lots awash

in un-natural lights aglow

above harsh surfaces of worry

where we park to listen.

Music soothes as often as it pushes

heart rates into overdrive.

We rise on dancing feet

or subside to slumberous ease.

One orchestra makes sense

of the notes unfolding

up and down,

racing and slowing

until the music transcends

the past and brings us up fast

to the climax at the end.

Two orchestras cannot play together

unless they play the same notes

at the same pace to the same place

in time and space.

Each must follow the same rules

and read the same music sheet.

Without such agreement

there is a cacophony of sound.

No matter how well one orchestra

plays by the rules, its uplifting

music becomes mere sound,

its rhythm unable to be discerned

by the racket from the second

orchestra who has turned

from reading the music sheet

and playing by the rules.

We cannot stand the dissonance

and turn the music off.

We mistakenly believe

both orchestras at fault.

It is time to call a halt

to the orchestra of whining instruments

which refuse to abide by music’s rules

and continue to play us false.

I yearn for the sweet sounds of truth.

November cannot come too soon.

ASSASSINATION OF A NATION’S SOUL

Assassination of a Nation’s Soul

What violence and threat to our democracy

has done to me

cannot be undone, it seems.

I watch the source of so much pain

fall to ground, his right ear maimed.

I wonder at the loss of feeling at such sight.

I try to feel something, anything, even fright.

Instead numbness overtakes my soul.

This does not seem the same to me

as the grief I felt for the John or Bobby Kennedy,

for Martin Luther King, Jr. or Medgar Evers;

Cheney, Schwermer and Goodman;

For Malcom X and Viola Luizzo.

Where did my compassion go?

I wish I could say I know.

Suffering is all the same.

Every human being feels its shame.

Even that I cannot feel

as layer by layer the Constitution unravels,

and freedom’s bell no longer peals.

How far my hope has traveled

beyond court decisions and hateful words

meant to appeal to nameless hordes

by those who speak only for themselves,

cheered by those who fill their empty chords.

Surrounded by narcissistic churls

whose images and taunts unfurl

across media’s many avenues,

such violence seemed inevitable.

And, all he cared about was finding his shoes

as others tried to protect his life,

he struggled against their efforts

exposing them to more danger

so he could rise within their safe embrace

and raise a fist in everyone’s face.

Still, I feel nothing.

Neither sorrow nor joy.

Neither faith nor fear.

Neither love  or hate.

Neither hope nor mistrust.

Look at what this man and his supporters

have done to us!

LETTER TO GEORGE WASHINGTON

Dear George,

I write to you

with unfortunate news.

The position you first held

as leader of our new nation

is no more.

The “mister” you insisted

was to be your title,

one you proudly wore,

has been put aside.

“Mister” President is now free

to commit crimes

with immunity.

You put your sizable fortune,

your very life,

your sacred honor

on the line

to create a new nation

where no man is divine.

Each “mister” can be

charged with a crime,

presumed innocent

until found guilty at trial.

All evidence subject to review;

no hiding behind position.

No man above the law.

Until now.

The king you and your patriots

deposed is back in charge.

I mourn the useless

suffering and death at Valley Forge.

The Robert’s Court

threw you, your men and all of us

under the despotic, greedy bus

of those as wealthy as you

and our Founding Fathers were.

They do not use their power of wealth

as you did…for us.

They use theirs with stealth

to rule with absolute immunity

of positional power.

They destroy our nation hour by hour.

We can no longer question

the acts in which crime’s plans are mentioned.

Such Republicans have wrought

what King George the Third could not;

The destruction of our democracy,

and replaced it with autocracy.

My dearest George.

Our republic will soon be no more.

Please pray for us,

I most sincerely implore.

FIREHOSE OF LIES

The firehose of lies

was no surprise.

Propaganda tries

to bind our eyes

that we can only see

distorted reality.

First the claim

of aging incompetency,

then the firehose of lies overcomes

and brings us to our knees.

Suddenly, we panic with loud cries

Find someone who can remain on his feet

or in the election we face defeat.

Yes, President Biden stumbled trying to debate

a firehose of lie and keep things straight.

The force of the hose un-checked

was simply too great.

Instead of taking away the firehose

wielded by Trump to our government depose,

we ask another to stand in place

of the man most able and willing

save America’s world leadership place.

The firehose of lies is the disgrace,

as is the man who wields it

as he sneers and smirks

watching democracy fall on its face.

Putin, it is clear, admires Trump’s stance

laughingly watching Biden dance

as he tries to withstand, tries and tries

to awaken us all to the firehose of lies.

Instead of taking away our presidential prize,

take away the firehose of lies.

Firehosing is a propaganda tactic that involves pushing out large mounts of false and misleading information at once. The term was first applied to Russian propaganda strategies intended to silent dissent and mislead the public. Wikipedia, Jan.13, 2021. Actual use of firehoses is used in this country to silence protesters. It has been used against those Americans active in Civil Rights campaigns.

THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN

Wizard of Oz: Discovering the man behind the curtains a con man and entertainer.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

Only one thing is certain.

In your heart, you know it to be true.

The only person who matters is you.

That is the core of democracy,

a republic which is not a theocracy,

nor a monarchy, nor autocracy.

No man or woman will come to save your nation.

Now, pay attention

to school boards and zoning boards,

and definitely boards of election

where you will find your greatest protection.

Watch the mayors, governors and secretaries of state.

Do they make decisions with love or hate?

Vote out those who help keep his curtain closed

before it is too late.

The man behind the curtain is a wizard and a clown

who loves the limelight and will never fight

to keep the nation safe, nor guarantee your rights.

The man behind the curtain entertains himself

by entertaining fear in everyone else.

Those who serve him bow down in disgrace

and forfeit the security of any safe space

to exercise their freedom of ideas.

They can no longer listen to you.

They must do what he says they must do.

He looks for a way to escape.

Leave him to stew.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

Only one thing is certain.

That is you.

VOTE!

GARDENERS LOVE NOT HATE

Photo by Andrew Neel on Pexels.com

Gardeners know they are not always going to succeed.

They depend on undependable forces to meet the garden’s need.

Too much or too little rain interferes with their success.

Too high or too low a wind can create great distress.

Too soft or too hard an animal’s tread

can destroy an entire garden bed.

Gardeners are not well kept.

Covered in mud or drenched by errant hoses,

they kneel on dirt and scrub off mulch from shredded gloves.

They look like weeds themselves

as they hoe and  and bag the uncomfortable drudge.

They know the garden they view serves as judge.

There are no debates in gardens.

Debates serve no purpose for the gardener.

Only those who watch and stand aside and wait

feel free to judge the gardener’s flair.

They judge the gardener while breathing in fragrant air

the plants have cleaned.

They judge the gardener while relaxing on paths

the gardener’s feet have cleared.

They judge the gardener while eating crops

the gardener grew in fertile raised beds.

They stay clean while the gardener struggles to remain

on tired feet mired in mud so deep he moves more slow

at a pace they complain is way too slow.

And yet, the gardener in his wisdom carries on

to feed the spirits and bodies of those who watch his work

and share in the bounty of his grace.

Could they even try to keep apace

with the many tasks a gardener must face?

Joe, you have made our garden grow

into a thing of beauty because of all you know.

I know you cannot always compete with liars who berate

your efforts while they stand and smirk with hate.

You may not always look good these trying days.

But, you are beautiful to me in every way.

Stay in the garden of truth where weariness darkens night

and may not be pretty, but grows a garden of delight.

Goodness and Mercy

Goodness and Mercy

follow me every day,.

Their footfalls softly fall

As I make my way.

As darkness drops ahead

they lift their torches

to light my way,

comforting through nights

that threaten

To never go away.

I hear their voices

in children at play.

I feel their touch in hugs

from friends keeping loneliness at bay.

I share their laughs and smiles

with strangers on my way.

I am carried in their arms

by those who lift my fears away.

I accrue my many debts

but it is they who pay.

They carry me toward my fate

when I would wearily delay.

And, when it seems useless,

they remind me to pray:

“Thank you, Goodness and Mercy

for following me all my days.“

THE LUCKIEST PERSON ALIVE

Photo by Andrea Piacquadio on Pexels.com

Luck is likely geography

the geometry

of prime position,

being, simply being,

in the right place

at the right time.

Who decides

the time and place

you occupy?

We all know

parents try.

Rules create boundaries

to block the egress

from places

you would fly.

Custom dictates

and you comply.

Ask yourself

the reason why.

Find your position.

claim your space.

Make your own luck

in life’s race;

In prime position

to allow you to hold on

with a smiling disposition,

and to truly become

the luckiest person alive.

Letter to the Editor: Bar associations must insist on removal of Justices Thomas and Alito

Newark Advocate

U.S. Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito have engaged in insurrectionist activities, or at the least appear in support of it, by supporting calls to state legislators to create false electors ( Thomas); flying the American flag in support of insurrection at home (Alito) ; and by refusing to rule in a timely fashion so as to impede resolution of the president’s “absolute immunity” issue, contrary to procedural and substantive precedent. Both fail judicial impartiality by ruling on cases of “friends” giving expensive “gifts.”

null

Chief Justice John Roberts seems unable to stop such breach of legal ethics. Congressional impeachment of these justices is necessary, but seems unlikely given Republican obstruction.

It is time for bar associations nationwide to insist Alito and Thomas be removed from the court and disbarred from practicing law. Every lawyer in this country has sworn an oath to behave ethically and uphold the constitutions and laws of state and nation. This includes Alito and Thomas.

null

Why are the lawyers of this country remaining silent while the rule of law weakens at every level of adjudication (Judge Cannon)?

Speak now or we may forever have to hold our peace. The law may not be able to retain its union with justice and freedom, unless we speak now.

Columbus resident Louise Annarino is a former Ohio assistant attorney general, former associate director of legal affairs at Ohio University, and a former attorney at Legal Aid Society of Columbus who is now retired from the practice of law.
