THE LIGHT WE REFUSE TO SEE
I used to believe Truth lived in the shadows.
If only we could shine enough light,
then Truth would be set free
for all to see.
There are those who prefer we stay in the dark,
it is true. They fear the Light will open our eyes.
It is no longer so easy to darken the streets
upon which we set our feet
hoping to reach a place of greater liberty.
Truth speeds around the world
from one shadowed place to the next.
Through media Truth moves at the speed of light.
Truth seekers use facts to light our way
along the path to a new day,
one where Light holds sway.
The darkness can no longer hide Truth in shadow.
Those who live in the dark side of life
create new truths able to live in false Light.
In their constant retelling of lies
Truth simply dies in plain sight.
The battle between the Light and the Dark,
between Truth and Lies
is now exposed in MAGA prose
stealing the limelight with false praise
for oligarchs, autocrats and murderers
whose only goal is to control
the flow of wealth into their own pockets
while those who work to be whole
starve and struggle at their feet.
Those forced to flee and seek amnesty as refugees
would add their story to our own
brightening the Truth we already know.
The telling would not surprise the homeless
who walk our own streets.
The homeless, like Truth, used to hide in shadow.
We try to keep them there so we cannot see
the borders they have crossed.
Truth and Light and Love are all apiece.
Without Love we are blind and refuse to seeTruth.
There is no Light strong enough to overcome
deliberate blindness cushioned by lies.
We allow them in boardrooms, newsrooms,
hearing rooms and even, courtrooms.
“Speak Truth to Power,” isn’t that what we say?
When Power seizes the Light with falsehood
can we not see that False Light
can never be allowed to hold sway?
True Light is always more powerful than false.
Liars know this and ban books, and oppose
all who stand alight within Truth’s glow.
This is the one thing I still know.

DEFAMATION
Words can cut too close to the bone.
Words’ outside meaning fires the skin.
Words’ inside meaning, hidden from view
fires up hateful spew, just as true.
Words can cut too close to the bone.
splitting back the skin of what we have known.
Words open gaps to see within
what we have long hidden beneath our thin skins.
Words can make the blood flow strong,
too hard and too fast for too long.
Words flow beneath the marrow
to the depths of what we think we know.
Words pulse with their own beat
dancing through bodies to the soles of our feet.
Words leave bloody footprints to follow
until all blood is lost and our souls become hollow.
This is how words kill.
From outside in then out again
opening wounds we did not know
had crusted over wounds from long ago.
Words tear scars opening wounds anew
while ripping apart the peace we had found
to cure and to heal hate with love.
Words tell us love can never be true.
Words tell us love is not real;
if real, then, love is too weak to abide.
Words help us bury love so deep it subsides
and only hate can hold court inside.
Words boost false pride
that I am better than you.
I die inside as I try to kill the few
who speak the truth you once knew.

SPECIAL MASTER
I cannot write carelessly about the Law. I am a retired attorney-at-law, former State Assistant Attorney General and former Associate Director of Legal Affairs for a university. I love the law with a passion. I am dedicated to the protection it affords individuals, my state, my country, my world.
The Declaration of Independence and Constitution of the United States are foremost in our minds when speaking of the treasure which is our Democratic republic. Brave documents written by men who had had enough of autocratic rule by a king out of touch with his subjects’ concerns an ocean away. Self-rule advanced eons by the declaration and constitutional reign of this nation of laws and not men. But, this new form of governance was at terrible risk of failure as it sought to establish itself among the colonists in the many states of the new nation. In 1789 George Washington signed into law the firs act of the new congress, the Judiciaries Act. The Judiciaries Act established a three-part judiciary made up of district, courts, circuit courts and the Supreme Court, out-lining the duties of each branch. It also defined the role of Attorney General and the Dept. of Justice. It has been amended over the years, but never up-ended. The rights of appeal and the ultimate supremacy of the highest court to assure the constitution and the principles of the newly established republic were upheld in every state of the new union. Cases decided under this new system cemented the Rule of Law as the authority over its citizens. We have no king. We have no prince. We have political parties; but they have been given no authority to rule us. Let me repeat. Political parties have no legal authority over a free people. Only the law does so.
There have always been citizens seeking a king, or a party to undermine the Rule of Law. This is not new. What is new is a party which would be king. What is new are judges on our courts willing to acknowledge that party as king.
A judge by definition must be an independent arbiter, looking to the American law and its principles to guide her decisions. No judge should EVER comment before all parties to a lawsuit have even filed their briefs; nor that she in “inclined” to decide in favor of a party to the suit. No judge should ever place party interest above the rule of law, its principles, and the security of the nation she serves.
Judges, like all public servants, serve the people.
There is a principle at work in legal ethics supported by courts to protect an individual’s conversation with his attorney regarding a legal issue. There is a principle at work supported by courts to not reveal through the normal exercise of court transparency those secrets of the nation which, if exposed, could cause irreparable harm to the very nation and its people’s national security. There is a principle at work supported by courts to protect witnesses and keep them safe.
In this case, an about to be charged criminal who stole the most desperately protected top secret documents, and it appears those likely including nuclear weapons secrets, hid that evidence of his crime amidst personal papers. Thus, we the people represented by the Department of Justice and FBI are faced with trying to sort the evidence of the crime for two reasons: to successfully prosecute a treasonous ex-president, and to protect our own national security and those who act on our behalf to do so every day.
Let me be clear, this case should have been disposed of by summary judgement the first day it was filed by the ex-president. He should have been re-directed to the court which handled the case from its inception, and this argument reviewed by the judge who already was handling the search and its legal issues. Or, it should have been dismissed since he had no standing to contest anything since the papers were seized as evidence of a crime. Not just any crime. A crime that endangers an entire nation, and other nations within our alliance. His criminal act of hiding documents should not then be used to further his and others’ crime. The delays caused the moment this judge accepted, and now continues to delay the efforts to unravel the crime and shut-down the threat to each of these nations, furthers the crime. A Special Master appointment furthers the crime. Justice delayed is Justice denied. The people of this nation deserve justice.
My guess is that the attorney-client communication at issue likely is more evidence of criminal activity affecting the survival of the country, which the attorneys should have reported, not argue should be protected. We are putting the interest of a single criminal over the interest of the continuing existence of the United states of America, and the republics around the world who strive to be equally free of kings, princes, autocrats and thug parties.
Individual interests are sacrosanct within our courts. This situation reminds me of the philosophical question about three people in a life boat with only enough food for one to survive delayed rescue. Who is sacrificed as the danger continues and prompt rescue is unlikely? Do we sacrifice one to save more? Who could decide such case? Judges face difficult situations every day. Solomons are not that rare. I once had a case where the divorcing parties last remaining dispute was who got the parrot. The Judge ordered the parrot split in half unless an agreement was reached in 10 minutes. Opposing counsel and I were thrilled to carry that message since nothing we said had moved either party over months of discussion.
Judges must be decisive. It is implied by their title, right? “Under consideration” is a dodge where the legal issues are is clear as they are here. This judge seems to be looking for a way to satisfy the party which holds her future appointments in their hands. Or, perhaps she was just not so qualified as she needed to be to decide cases at this level, or perhaps she has the nation’s interest at heart. But, if so, is she blind to the cost to the nation by her non-decisive action? Is she struggling to find some way, any way, to defend and support her “inclinations”?
The Rule of Law, the Judiciaries Act, are the cement holding together the foundation of any democratic republic. Our foundation is crumbling before our eyes, Silence is not an option.

THE TIME OF DAY
With disdain Dad would say,
“I wouldn’t give him the time of day.”
Want the time of day?
Some would never deign
to give it to you.
I’ll give you the time of day.
It is time to explain
that everyone lies.
They lie in bed and play
with lists of all they will do.
They start each day with lies
to themselves which eschew
their human frailties, and rise
to fail, but never admit
they are but lesser gods.
This is too much reality for some
whose narcissism trods
the boards in life’s grand play.
We ignore lies with civil display
of nods and winks and handshakes.
Even liars have money to spend.
We dare not let them get away
with dodging truth and yet we do.
Why pass up the chance
bleed them dry and get some dough?
Or the votes of those who believe
their lies, told so often truth all blends
into nonsense which makes us
jump on their bandstand
and play their false tune.
Everyone lies we tell ourselves.
So what? Just do not pay attention
and we will be fine.
Lies told often enough will
become the party line
and trap all who refuse
to admit the lie itself is the ruse.
The trick is not to believe the lie,
nor tune out from lies’ refrains
repeated on media outlets
until their bloodied stains
darken our ability to see
the truth which could
have set us free.
The trick is to stay tuned in
and search for facts
that disclose the sin.
Then ask for forgiveness
for the lies we told throughout the day.
So we can sleep the sleep of newborns,
awakened to a new world
where truth is explored
and lessons learned
that we may grow up in reality.
This is that time of day for me.

DOUBTING THOMAS
He who uses and abuses
the Rule of Law
destroys the foundation
of the nation.
Criminality alone is insufficient
to destroy the system put in place
to bring a nation into grace.
The Law is a jealous mistress
whom wives of judges should not ignore.
A wife’s voice has no place near the Bench,
nor the bed, nor the couch;
not directly into the ear,
nor spoken aloud before the crowd.
Chief Justices must deplore
women or men above the law.
Attorney Generals must assemble
facts and charges against
those who try to suspend
Law’s eminence and rule.
Ignoring such stands is playing the fool.
if Law is to rule over all,
Judges must abstain
from political refrain.
Politicians must abstain
from disinformation campaign.
We have seen it all before.
We would never countenance
such false description on a box of cereal.
Yet, we allow false descriptions
of political opponents; and the lies
in briefs filed by false prophets;
and the lies by talking heads
who entertain ignorant hoards
rather than inform.
Stand silent?
We cannot allow such a shallow response
to tsunami waves of autocratic ways
if democracy is to survive and thrive.
We must open our mouths and shout it out.
We must run to the polls and vote those out
who doubt the value of the Rule of Law,
refuse subpoenas and hide behind lies
to bring our democracy to its knees.
Stand and alight in the freedom fight.
Doubt the Thomases of this world,
watching their abuse of Law unfold.

TRADING TRUTH FOR POWER DURING WAR
We have been at war a long time. Those who predict we will have a second civil war miss the mark. We have been in a second civil war awhile already. I hesitate to write these words. It too easily will invite comparison to other wars than the one we are in. Just as references to a holocaust always reminds us of the worst one we can remember, which killed millions of innocents selected by a small group within a larger group of those who considered themselves superior beings, while others stood by and watched. We know the details differ from that Holocaust and others before and after. Just as the details of this Civil War differ from the first. But, the strategy of war is clearly present; and we would see it, if we would start noticing what is truly going on.
Wars start with lies. Propaganda machines must be put in place to name an enemy in derogatory terms so vile we can convince ourselves killing the other is not only justified but ordained. Religious leaders must be brought round, lest they stand in the way of those who would destroy other human beings, or deny them their right to live unmolested. All those who would seek to protect the innocents from attack must be corrupted and rewarded for standing aside while war proceeds. The more people who slide into deception, the easier it is to win a war. Once the state approves the action through legislation and courts, it is nearly impossible to turn the tide away from war.
Newt Gingrich enhanced the lies. Media constraints were removed under President Reagan allowing propaganda networks like FOX News and others to assert lie after lie until truth was no longer a cornerstone of journalism. Even FOX newscasters argue in court they are not journalists but entertainers. Of course. More than a decade ago television news was removed from control of a Vice-President for news and placed under the Vice-president for entertainment. Overseas news bureaus were dismantled. These changes allowed for the consolidation of propaganda as news. The New York Times and the Washington Post journalists, old-school journalism, still require three sources to validate stories. How can they compete with an un-regulated internet of algorithm-base-profitability news releases? The Big Lie is not the first lie. It is the one we noticed. The big lie started a long time ago. And after Trump is gone, and the party of lies disbanded the lies will continue unless we stop them by restoring the regulations which insisted on truth-telling. Our democracy flourished when free speech, like other freedoms, were fairly and reasonably regulated to assure freedom for all of us. Autocrats do not want us to have free minds. They want us to have controlled minds.
Think this Civil War we are in has caused no deaths? Tell that to the 800,000 and still counting Americans who have died from Covid. Tell that to Ahmaud Arbery, and to the Native American women on tribal lands who are America’s “missing”, and to Asian-American women fearful of walking alone, and for all women afraid of walking alone at night, and for those whose sexual identity is under attack. There is a commonality to such attacks…those under attack are not white males who believe themselves superior. The attacks are done by white males who believe themselves superior. The number of attacks are increasing exponentially with the increase in the lies sanctioned by certain media outlets and social networks, including comments by members of Congress. The amount of money funding these congressional leaders, secessionist groups, white supremacist groups and social media influencers is staggering. Yet, we are told we are a nation in economic crisis caused by immigrants and refugees, unions, people of color, women in the workforce etc. There is plenty of money in this country. But as part of the new civil war we have continually enacted legislation to channel money to the already rich through our tax code, and bleed dry the middle class. The big lie continues to blame the poor for our economic failures. How can the poor lose money they never had? How can their inability to purchase goods and stimulate the economy be blamed on them? Big lies make us stupid. Big lies make us illogical.
When did secession become acceptable? Or has it always been so? Was it when Sarah Palin whose husband at the time, a known secessionist, was selected to run as Vice-President by the Republican Party? Those statues and monuments to secessionists are Big Lies, too. We have honored the Big Lie for a very long time. We have enshrined it.
Gingrich did not create it. He did see its value in promoting a Republican Party which continues to push white male supremacy as its core belief. It no longer has any other platform. It has become, quite openly, the secessionist party. Donald trump is merely the poster boy for misogynist, racist, wealthy white supremacy. The rest of America, including poor white men of good will are the victims of this Civil War. There is no culture war because America has no culture separate from its diversity of cultures. The American tapestry has served us well. It created a strong middle-class capable of supporting a democratic republic. But, a democratic and culturally diverse America stands in the way of autocrats and oligarchs seeking to consolidate their wealth and power.
Money bought legislative power and blocked political funding laws to stop this corrupting influence on legislators. Money bought candidates and blocked transparency in political ads. Money bought judges and blocked voting rights enforcement. While Democratic candidates, for the most part, rely on single low value donors, Republican candidates raise billions of dollars at home and abroad. Money floats across boundaries through multi-national banks and corporations. Trump, the money-launderer understands this.The great con man has always been a great liar. The republican Party thinks he is perfect for the job of continuing its assault on truth. Because trading truth for power is an acceptable value during war.

Not My Job to Handle Your Feelings
Over 25 years ago our state bar association convened a group of women lawyers, 2 from each county, to address sexist laws and regulations, and court practices. I represented the county in which I practiced law. We met on Malcolm X’s birthday so I implored the group to also address racism as well. It seemed, I suggested, that only addressing sexism was insufficient to create justice. And as Malcolm said,” If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem”. The group agreed to expand its review and its reach.
The breakout sessions were useful. We formed sub-groups to research specific areas. At the close of the day the Chief Justice of our state Supreme Court, a man, and the president of the state bar association, a man, spoke to the group. They appeared a bit unsettled by our enthusiasm for the project. My comments citing Malcolm X contributed to their appearing to be ill at ease. One of the men advised us to ” go easy on the men” because our efforts and comments would ” hurt their feelings” and make them uncomfortable. They told us we need to “help them with their feelings” as we discussed and delivered our findings. It might be too upsetting for them.
That did it! I rose up out of my seat and announced that as women, and as African-Americans the lawyers in the room already had to handle our own emotions because of the sexism and racism we experienced from those same men. And it took all our strength to do so. It was not our job to handle their feelings, too. They would have to handle their own feelings.
I explained that we agreed to help our bar association and our state courts correct that sexism and racism which had made our justice system so oppressive to women and African-Americans. The least the men could do was handle their own feelings, responses and actions.the room grew so quiet one could have heard a pin drop. The men paled, and shrugged helplessly. They had no clue how offensive their comments had been. They were gentlemen and I was …. not.
This belief that the oppressed are expected to ” tread lightly” so as to ” protect men’s feelings” is exactly was the police ask if those protesting the police brutality that hides behind the Blue Line. That is not our job. The police who understand better than any the effects of police brutality need to handle their own feelings and their own actions. And those who stand up and advise us to not make them ” uncomfortable” ask too much.

Used to be the Ku Klux Klan, men…even women… of every education level and background including law enforcement, donned white robes and hoods to protect their identity and hide their shame. Their stated purpose was to meet out justice to African-Americans who had crossed over a boundary; and,in some way failed to acknowledge the superiority and power of the white community. Perhaps, a 14 year old African-American boy smiled at a white married woman as he entered her small grocery http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/till/ . Perhaps a 37 year old African-American father of three children spent his days registering voters and seeking the end of Jim Crow laws as a N.A.A.C.P field organizer http://www.history.com/news/7-things-you-should-know-about-medgar-evers.
The murders of Emmet Till and Medgar Evers are well known, but every African-American, boys and men in particular, endure retaliatory acts based on racial bias and racial animus every day. They are familiar with expressions of bigotry and punishment justified by white fear. The white robes are gone now,replaced by an unreasonable white fear instututionalized in the law, and unquestioned by the white media.
Attorneys on each side of the George Zimmerman murder trial scrupulously avoided the racial motivation for the murder. The judge ordered the phrase “racial profiling” not be used. White “legal experts” on every channel affirmed this approach, as that required by a unbiased court. They are all wrong. The only way the court could have been free of bias would have been to acknowledge the racial bias underlying the case. Lady Justice is blindfolded but she is not stupid. She must not pretend race is not a motivation to kill. Our history clearly tells us otherwise. She need not play the fool; unless, she fears her power and authority can be used to empower scary African-American boys and men.
I expected the defense team to provide a strong defense woven into a story of why it was reasonable for a fully-grown man,trained in martial arts and armed with a gun, to fear a 17 year old African-American boy on his way home from a “munchies-run”. I expected the defense team to discount the boy’s right to defend himself from the attack his cultural history and his phone friend warned him to expect from his silent stalker. And,I expected the defense team to turn Trayvon’s self-defense into the justification of Zimmerman’s fear.
I naively did not expect the prosecution team to ignore racial bias. Special Prosecutor Angela Corey stated “This case has never been about race or the right to bear arms. We believe this case all along was about boundaries, and George Zimmerman exceeded those boundaries.” http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Justice/2013/0714/Zimmerman-not-guilty-Victory-for-new-kind-of-civil-rights-era The prosecution was eager to talk about boundaries,a euphemism for racial animus. But of course, we refuse to admit the existence of racial bigotry. We refuse even when we are charged to seek justice for the murder of an African-American teenager who did NOTHING wrong;certainly,nothing to explain the irrational or unreasonable fear proclaimed by Zimmerman’s attorneys. The prosecution failed to admit race drove motivation until the last minutes of the trial. It allowed the defense to hide race under the hood,as many of us do when we face racial animus. What we fear is not African-Americans.What we fear is our own racism.
Now, the “legal experts” are proclaiming it is impossible to prove racial animus led to Trayvon’s death. The only reason they make this claim is beacuse they cannot comprehend, or refuse to acknowledge, the continuing and historical irrationality of white fear. No one who is willing to admit this “fear turned to hate” is hogwash believes the DOJ cannot find such a connection. On THE VIEW today,the “legal expert” Dan Abrams responded to factually-based questions and comments by Whoopi Goldberg and Sherri Shepherd by dismissing their comments as “emotional’. The lack of racial intelligence among our legal experts, prosecutors,defense attorneys,judges, media pundits and manyof us white Americans is institutionalized. This must change. twe must do all we can to raise our racial I.Q. We no longer wear physical hoods over our heads to hide our identity and our shame. We wear figurative hoods of ignorance over our heads to pretend we have no reason to feel shame. Take off the hoods,America! We cannot change what we refuse to face…our selves.

LOVE ‘EM OR HATE ‘EM
I have seen this hate before. I could not understand it then.I do not understand it now. When my mother lay dying it became clear to me that the only measure of a life is the ability to love. A body shriveled by cancer’s reach into every cell, wracked by pain, realizing death is near holds onto love, not life. Death’s grip is too fierce to break. But, the only thing death cannot destroy is love. I saw it in my dying mother’s eyes, reflected in my own. That love binds us still. It always will. So, no, I do not understand the need to hold onto hate when love is so much stronger. Love reveals our strength to us; hate, our weakness. Love displays our courage; hate, our cowardice. So, no, I do not understand hate.
As child of Italian immigrants, growing up in the 1950’s, in a neighborhood populated by two German immigrant families, dozens of Italian immigrants and a few Irish immigrants, I learned my place. Venturing too far away from the four block area adjacent to the railroad tracks we inhabited brought me to the Appalachian whites nearby, who could not afford to live anywhere else, so had to live near the despised and hated immigrants. Our Catholicism, a commonality of each immigrant group, did not endear us to “Americani”, either. We learned to ignore their taunts and sneers, threats and minor assaults with whatever weapon they wielded…a switch from a shrub, a golf ball, a pitched badminton racket, a rock. We were careful to avoid the “hoods” carrying switch blades. Skinned knees caused while running to escape and falling, split lips or bruises were not uncommon. To be clear, not all of those “Americani” participated in bully tactics; but, too few fully embraced us, and none defended us. I have seen this hate before. I have felt this hate before.
My parents explained that hate is not universal. Only cowards and ignorant fools cling to hate. Most people know how to love. Thus, we were admonished to never hate anyone. Stay strong. Show love no matter what. Be brave. Never start a fight; but, never run from one. Stand up to bullies. They are weak, fearful cowards and will back down. Hate is not endemic to white people, nor to any group. But, within every group there are cowards…bold, brassy, loud and stupid cowards. We held our ground at the playground. We ignored the jokes and jibes. We ducked the projectiles. We moved forward when told to get back, staring with fierce determination to continue to swing, to play ball, to run races. We seldom allowed hate to stop our games and ruin our fun. I learned to withhold my smirk when I saw the bully fall back and slink away. I learned to love despite the hate directed my way. I invited the bully to stay and play. Some did. Thus, we broke the force that would have driven us away from enjoying our childhood. We grew strong, fearless and full of hope for better days.
The recent anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy brought back these childhood memories. When the announcement of his death came over our PA system every class adjourned to the chapel at our Catholic high school. We prayed the rosary together. We prayed for comfort, peace and love in our country. Then, we were sent home to grieve with our families. I gathered my books, not knowing what to expect next, and when school might resume. Across the street was a public junior high school. As I walked by on my way home, clad in my school uniform identifying me as a Catholic, one by one, several public school students shouted at me, “We finally killed him!” “He got what was coming to all you filthy Catholics !” “ This is what happens to Catholics who don’t know their place.” I remember these taunts and all the others. They are tattooed on my heart and on my brain. I even can feel the look of confusion on my puckered brow, wondering how these young kids could hold so much hate for their own president, and for me, a total stranger who had done them no harm. How could they so dishonor the wonderful country we shared, and its democratic principles. No one is more aware of or more grateful for American principles than immigrants are. These long-time inhabitants seemed not to recognize such values at all.
That was then. This is now. Ignorant people still cling to their hate. But the indifference to the haters, the lack of comment rebuking haters which I expected but sadly never heard led to this day. Now, hate is fueled by the right wing of the Republican Party, and not condemned by its members. Worse, its chosen presidential candidate, whose first election succeeded because of, if not regardless of, his hate-spewed speech and hate-filled acts toward people of color, women and non-Christians is further encouraged to continue hate-filled policies and practices which will kill our democracy as surely as it killed Medgar Evers, Emmett Till, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, and Robert Kennedy. I have seen this hate before. I did understand it then. I do not understand it now.
I always knew I became a lawyer to stand in the way of those who blocked programs, policies and practices which honor diversity and seek justice for all. I would be in position where such efforts could be implemented and enforced. Only now, do I understand it was my armor to protect that child in me who still believes that good can prevail once we are willing to stand up to bullies; whether that bully is a landlord, bank, or company. The law is the bulwark against hate and harm, against greed and abuse of power. Now, I watch my beloved Law and its Courts undermined by those bullies by Republicans in state legislatures and the U.S.Congress, by Republican governors and secretaries of state and states attorneys general who support a bully as their fund-raising cheer-leader to cover their own dark deeds. The alternatives are not to choose between two evils; but, to choose good over evil. To choose love over hate. I watch the silent white supremacists alongside them allow them free rein. People of Color, Native Americans, immigrants have always known the Law favored the wealthy and powerful, majority of them white men. Now, we all recognize the system that has been in place for so long. As a nation we are reaping what we allowed to be sown. I still do not understand the hate that has allowed this to go on for so long. But, I will still fight such hate with love; until my dying breath…then beyond.
I know how to survive bullies. I am not worried for myself. I watch my country try to survive the bullies, those they eat dinner with at their private clubs who are shocked by what they see…what the oppressed have always seen. Yet, they stay silent or act entertained. Or worse yet, they choose to ignore what they have not wanted to notice. It is my countrymen whom I hope will uphold its constitution, its citizens I hope will stand up to bullies and vote them out of office before it is too late. The power of bullies’ wealth can be overcome by our numbers, if we vote. That is a big if. Mobilize, register, transport and assist voters to the polls. Write Letters to the Editors. Speak out on social media to friends and family. Meet your neighbors and recruit their support for the efforts it will take to stay the course of a democratic republic. I do not understand the hate. I never will. It does not matter. What matters is I will not allow hate to rule my country, nor anyone in it. I choose love, a love embodied in a country which puts no man above the law, and believes all men are created equal, with unalienable rights. I took an oath to uphold the constitution. I took an oath to love.
