MY FELLOW AMERICANS

MY FELLOW AMERICANS

I hold my tongue.

It takes strength I do not have.

Whimpers escape

On shattered breaths,

In silent screams.

The fight worries my soul,

Battle weary and choking,

On words held tight inside.

Once the scream begins

I doubt I could stop.

I wait for your speech.

I yearn for your promise

To stop the authoritarian

Who has taken over our house,

Emptied its vaults,

Stolen its wealth,

Sold its power

To the highest bidders.

So, I write. That I can do

While I wait for you.

To me, this nothing new.

Do you believe me now?

DECONSTRUCTION

Columbus, Ohio 10-18-2025

The streets were lined for blocks on end.

Signs reminded all who rejoiced to attend

Why they walked and talked and smiled and waved

At passing cars who braved delays

While drivers honked horns and shouted out

“Vote him out and make it a rout!”

Costumed critters danced to our delight

Knowing their freedom would give him a fright.

Deconstruct the lies we have been told.

Deconstruct the narrative being sold.

Deconstruct the bullie’s hold.

Deconstruct institutional mold.

Gather in peace the young and the old.

Stronger are you, more wise, more bold.

Deconstruct so we can rebuild

What he has destroyed with his minions’ lack of skill.

We know how to do this, and more.

We have done it many times before.

My thanks to my friends in Clintonville area of Columbus who helped me attend this moment of patriots’ challenge to the con men robbing the USA of its power, wealth, ideals and humanity. The lack of media coverage was appalling. The misrepresentation of attendance numbers cannot be challenged when media fails to provide images of the gatherings. A local station covered it AFTER it was over and crowds had dispersed. Another stated hundreds attended when it was actually thousands. We are here. We are resisting. We are going nowhere until the despotism and kidnapping of people and the Supreme Court, universities, news organizations, social media outlets, medical and public health Institutions… even our very language and the meaning of words and phrases has been brought to an end and freedom restored.

We shall not be silenced.

D-DAY TODAY

Photo by Karin Setterholm on Pexels.com

I learned of D-Day from newsreels

 shown in between double-features

at the Saturday morning movies

which cost a quarter

at our local theatre.

I learned of D-Day listening

at the feet of my father

hidden under the kitchen table

where Daddy spoke with buddies

who went to war with him

after years of childhood friendship.

I learned of D-Day in school

where we studied WW II,

and ignored the study of Viet-Nam,

while fellow students were drafted

to go fight a different war.

Korea was seldom mentioned

anywhere but among the men

like my cousin who survived the fight.

I learned of D-Day from movies

like OVERLORD, and later,

SAVING PRIVATE RYAN.

But, those images had already been ingrained

on the bank of memories lodged in my brain.

Images of certain death

where the words “last ditch effort”

were not mere metaphor, but a lesson to

never make war, nor allow it to cross our shore.

Today is D-Day, not in reverent remembrance,

but as a last-ditch call for the war

that we face against crony capitalism,

corruption, Putin international mobsters

posing as politicians; heads of national security,

homeland security, and even presidents.

Greed brought war within our shores.

This is our D-Day hidden inside fake news,

and Project 2025, and a budget reconciliation

package too large to read or report upon,

Too quickly pushed through by enemies

of state we call Republicans,

but who are nazis manning bunkers

Photo by Hub JACQU on Pexels.com

called The Great Wall like the one

our fascists try to build  along our southern border.

To keep brown people out? Or keep us in?

Is America becoming a giant camp

concentrating those exercising free speech,

free movement and all dissent beneath the thumb

of authoritarian diatribe and power, making us numb

and willing to cooperate with endless hate?

I honor those who once fought to save the world

and keep it free from hate and bigotry,

and create a fair economy which served us all.

I see the last ditch in my mind with no need to recall.

It lives on every street, in every neighborhood,

in every school board meeting, and City Hall;

in governor’s mansions and courts of law.

It is still alive these many years

and brings anger along with tears

burning the back of my throat

as I mourn those who breached the fascist wall

and those whose bodies I imagine afloat

off Omaha and Utah Beaches, and now, in our cities.

And I remember, as if it is today. It is. Such a pity.

DEAR PROTESTERS

Photo by Chris Alo on Pexels.com

We see you. We hear you. We stand beside you.

But now, in spirit, bowed down

by age, and illness, and disability

we no longer meet you at the march in body.

The feet and legs no longer allow

standing on the corners, hugging the curbs,

marching along with you one-by-one.

The hands and arms no longer allow

lifting the sign, carrying messages aloft,

marching along with you one-by-one.

We can still lift a pen, still lift a brush.

We know it is not nearly enough

to calm the heart, comfort the soul

or change a stiff and unrelenting mind.

It is enough to calm, comfort and awaken

our weakened, weary, warrior selves.

We send our spirits to stand beside you

as you march along one-by-one.

We can remind you and all who watch

that more stand with you than they can see.

You are not alone

as you march to keep us free.

HUMANITY OR INSANITY?

Without humanity

there is only insanity.

Children kill themselves and one another,

forgetting we are all sister and brother,

with guns and weapons of war

until no one feels safe anymore.

When humanity is not in play

the other becomes easy prey,

to satisfy weak ego’s need

for power to feed their greed.

Self-loathing hides behind the cloud

stirred up as sycophants run, wowed

by the big man’s stolen wealth and fame,

in an endless hateful, meaningless game.

Without humanity

there is only insanity.

FREEDOM HAIKU

Photo by Polina Kovaleva on Pexels.com

A collective grief

has settled over the land.

Only time can heal.

We  may never know

nor fully understand why

our freedom must go.

We must be the heart

of miracles yet to be.

And bring freedom back.

It is ours to seize

from its darkest journey and

bring it back to light.

Courage is our friend.

Struggles are not the end, but

A new beginning.

And just like that, friends,

the weight of grief rises up.

Grief comes to an end.

I yearn to see you

happily and truly free,

breathing liberty.

THE AGE OF HUMANS

Photo by Anna Tarazevich on Pexels.com

I have lived through the  Stone Age, the Bronze Age,

the Iron Age, the Middle Age, the Industrial Age,

the Space Age, the Communication Age.

I am human, so it seems,

and able to look back as well as forward;

a mere mammal trying

to become part of that thing

we like to call humanity.

How do we know who we are

when we do not know the neighbor next door?

How much effort does it take to explore

each member of a community?

We do not even truly know our family.

Strangers pose a serious threat

that we have not learned to handle yet.

We play with religion and philosophy

to understand what humans are meant to be.

We have become the source of inhumanity

around the globe we once thought flat.

The more we learn, the more we fear.

The less we know even where we are at.

We who do not know ourselves, can

never feel safe.

Without self we are never in a truly safe space.

Democracy is as fragile as we.

If we cannot trust ourselves, whom can we trust?

In a democratic republic, trust we must.

Demagogues know this is so.

Wealth and power are hard to let go.

To seize power from “no-nothings” comes easily.

Divide and conquer rallies laughingly.

It has become a right-wing norm

used by our nation’s enemies

who need never use their armies

to cross our borders, when we are so willing

to allow them to sway and inform us who we are

day after day after day after day after day.

Only because we do not know who we are, anyway.

Or, in any way useful to ruling ourselves.

Like human children, human adults vote to play.

Humans are entering a new age every day.

A I will now become the new me,

a me I never expected to see.

One I never knew, it is true.

A I will know me much better than I do.

It will write and speak and act for me.

Deep inside what I once felt was free

will wither and wonder if I could have become

the real human, the real man or woman

the real me.

ART

JUST BREATHE, acrylic on canvas, painted the day Trump was elected president by Louise Annarino. He is still making it hard to breathe.

Art seldom follows

where there is nothing new to see.

Art creates new eyes

new ears, new hearts to set us free.

Art imagines what minds can’t comprehend

forging new beginnings as old ways end.

Politics is an art form

tossing power to and fro

showing us what we really think

and where we might go.

Art is everywhere we look

showing us what we need to know.

Art has no end date;

its timeliness simply portends.

Vote! it is still not too late.

Art is our dearest friend.

HOW TO CHOOSE A BABYSITTER

ATLANTA, GEORGIA – AUGUST 24: In this handout provided by the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, former U.S. President Donald Trump poses for his booking photo at the Fulton County Jail on August 24, 2023 in Atlanta, Georgia. Trump was booked on 13 charges related to an alleged plan to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. Trump and 18 others facing felony charges have been ordered to turn themselves in to the Fulton County Jail by August 25. (Photo by Fulton County Sheriff’s Office via Getty Images)

Babysitters don’t come cheap.

They are hard to find sometimes.

One wants to be chosen

to guard the those you hold most dear;

to protect them so you need not fear.

Ignore that he is a convict,

convicted on 34 charges,

awaiting sentencing.

Your children will not know, nor mind.

And the criminal charge of rape

was never made.

The statute of limitations had passed.

The new babysitter-to-be did have to pay

the woman the civil jury found he raped.

Photo by Christian Wasserfallen on Pexels.com

He had to pay when he lied about her charge

and defamed her for telling us what he did to her.

You do not have any daughters, right?

Your sons may be okay unless

he teaches them his ideas of sex-play.

And do not leave your  checkbook or credit card lying about.

He has a need to cheat, defraud and steal, the lout.

But you can lock them in the safe, right?

Of course your children cannot be locked away.

But, you think he is safe, you say?

Then by all means choose this babysitter on voting day.

BULLY PULPIT

Photo by Rosemary Ketchum on Pexels.com

Excuse me, Judge,

to be fair

I must be allowed to break the rule

of law and every other kind

so I may be able to do my thing,

which right now,

well, since forever,

has been running rings

around the opposition

to whatever scheme

currently could make me king.

Money has never been enough.

So, judge, I have to get tough.

You cannot believe

you can treat me

like all the other thugs,

who commit crimes

but cannot stand to do the time.

I am in a political campaign.

I have no time to admit the blame

for what I have done,

and continue to do.

Judge, shame on all of you.

Those other criminals can admit

their crime.

I simply do not have the time.

My problems are all because

of Jack Smith who dares to charge me

with crimes I have committed

against the country and the people

I must rule.

Judge, your interference

is really cruel.

If you, or anyone else, gets in my way

there will be hell to pay.

That should do it.

That is what I have to say.

Bullies always get their way.

I am the biggest bully of them all.

Let the others take my fall.
