RISE UP

Photo by James Collington on Pexels.com

Early morning risers are a breed apart.

They insist upon rising in the dark.

Their tattered dreams soon forgotten

they move to uncover windows;

not to simply let in the coming light

but, to first, acknowledge the night.

Darkness holds little mystery

to those who accept the misery

of what they watched unfold the day before,

and to believe the new day’s light will restore

balance, fairness, wisdom, hope and more.

Surely, the sun will shine on goodness

and love will once more rise with sun’s rays?

Such hopes can only be born in the dark.

Once sun rises and bathes us in her light

we forget the need for change we felt,

we hungered for, we fought for through the night.

Like babes in dark wombs we struggle to alight.

We yearn to be free of darkness and held tight.

Such memories of those first moments

are waiting to be born now in this morn’s sunlight.

Those who wake and walk in darkness know,

once more of us awake, all can soon be set aright.

MY FELLOW AMERICANS

MY FELLOW AMERICANS

I hold my tongue.

It takes strength I do not have.

Whimpers escape

On shattered breaths,

In silent screams.

The fight worries my soul,

Battle weary and choking,

On words held tight inside.

Once the scream begins

I doubt I could stop.

I wait for your speech.

I yearn for your promise

To stop the authoritarian

Who has taken over our house,

Emptied its vaults,

Stolen its wealth,

Sold its power

To the highest bidders.

So, I write. That I can do

While I wait for you.

To me, this nothing new.

Do you believe me now?

MOURNING PRAYER

Photo by Andrea Piacquadio on Pexels.com

Wake up.

Sit at the table.

Open the MacBook.

Click on the key.

Open Pages.

Take a deep breath.

What new horror?

Unlock the jaw.

Try to forget.

Relax the fingers.

Swallow the sigh.

Move the cursor.

Try not to cry.

Who was stolen overnight?

Who was charged?

What new non-crime planted?

What court noted what lies?

With what order do they not comply?

What illegal moves have they made?

When will law once again rule the day?

Discover anger and fear drops away.

There is beauty outside.

There is love everywhere.

Take a deep breath.

Breathe slow and deep.

Beg the silent watchers to wake.

Do not despair.

This has become my mourning prayer.

As a lawyer, I am in deep mourning over the DOJ and SCOTUS breech with Constitutional law, precedent and ethics. The law is king in the United States. No man is above it. Apparently, leaders of this current republican-controlled administration believe they are our now our “supreme leaders”. Speaker Johnson keeps the House of Representatives on vacation for another week, and refuses to swear in an elected official to protect the release of files naming powerful pedophiles and rapists. A private army in masks, with no names, kidnap citizens and non-citizens and disappear them. This is evil done in our name. Seven million speak out. But, most do not. They go about their day, perhaps complaining about high prices. As if that is what the true issue is. When hate and destruction attempt to rule over all of us. The White House is being deconstructed both physically and morally. Pray with me, even if you lack the will to fight with me.

DECONSTRUCTION

Columbus, Ohio 10-18-2025

The streets were lined for blocks on end.

Signs reminded all who rejoiced to attend

Why they walked and talked and smiled and waved

At passing cars who braved delays

While drivers honked horns and shouted out

“Vote him out and make it a rout!”

Costumed critters danced to our delight

Knowing their freedom would give him a fright.

Deconstruct the lies we have been told.

Deconstruct the narrative being sold.

Deconstruct the bullie’s hold.

Deconstruct institutional mold.

Gather in peace the young and the old.

Stronger are you, more wise, more bold.

Deconstruct so we can rebuild

What he has destroyed with his minions’ lack of skill.

We know how to do this, and more.

We have done it many times before.

My thanks to my friends in Clintonville area of Columbus who helped me attend this moment of patriots’ challenge to the con men robbing the USA of its power, wealth, ideals and humanity. The lack of media coverage was appalling. The misrepresentation of attendance numbers cannot be challenged when media fails to provide images of the gatherings. A local station covered it AFTER it was over and crowds had dispersed. Another stated hundreds attended when it was actually thousands. We are here. We are resisting. We are going nowhere until the despotism and kidnapping of people and the Supreme Court, universities, news organizations, social media outlets, medical and public health Institutions… even our very language and the meaning of words and phrases has been brought to an end and freedom restored.

We shall not be silenced.

NO RETREAT

Photo by Mikhail Nilov on Pexels.com

My country is not being stolen.

It is being sold to the highest bidder.

Wealth and power

are the voices of the hour.

Not unexpected

in a consumerism frenzy

fueled by media and investors.

Capitalism has its own axes to grind.

Now, it seems to grind down me and mine.

Turning to fascism is an easy turn of face

for a people untroubled by greed and hate;

for a nation  built on slavery and Jim Crow,

and denial of women’s rights to earn and grow

at the same pace, with the same grace,

all men seem entitled to know.

Religion once again is used to shame

and disgrace anyone unwilling

to bend the knee to fake gods

and destroy all faith

in a democratic republic of equals

with equal rights to remain free

of religious bigotry.

This is an old story, one we left behind

to build a new nation inspired by the divine

rights of all men and women to be free.

Now thugs are granted bounties

to place their heels on our necks.

Military mission which once defended

is now on our own streets, its purpose up-ended.

Wealth and power which once plundered

third world nations for fossil fuel and cash

now plunders our economy and middle class.

Science  once built a solid foundation

for a healthy, productive nation.

All our scientists built is now being turned to ash.

Massive turnouts in the streets.

Massive turnout at polls complete

our voices shouting, “ no retreat! ”

“No retreat! No retreat!”

A FAMILY HAIKU

Photo by Timur Weber on Pexels.com

Families are strange.

At once a warm, firm embrace;

and, cold, hard shackles.

Families are more

than blood, bone and genetics.

They are countries, too.

Families argue.

Families may often fight;

then set things to right.

PAVED ROADS

Station Road rebuilding 2 by Jonathan Wilkins is licensed under CC-BY-SA 2.0

The road to success is paved with cash.

Numbers add up with each step.

Roads are blown to dust

when there is no money to keep them up.

Campaigns are long roads in America.

The longer the road, the higher the cost.

Those who run races along America’s roadways

are not so fleet-footed as they appear.

Their feet often slide on cash piled too high.

Their feet often slow on cash piled too low.

Whenever you wonder “why”, follow the money,

its ebb and flow, its surrogate paths

to hide those in the know.

Senators and Congressmen cannot always follow

the path of a lead runner when the cash is low.

They find new paths where money will cushion

a challenging and uphill election or re-election.

Still wondering “why?” And who decides?

Ask the right questions. Swallow your pride.

Then you will know. You are along for a ride.

NAVALNY

How difficult to embrace such courage ?

How easily to allow Putin to disparage

and criminalize political opposition?

And what is our position?

How hard did we fight to protect such bravery

from an autocrats utter depravity?

We watched Navalny return to Russia

after being poisoned by one who would crush

a man with such courage and dedication

to the spirit of democracy and anti-corruption

in the same manner of Trump’s disruption

of our democratic republic’s election.

Trump would jail his enemies if he could.

“Lock them up”. His rallying cry would

encourage the cowards to pickup their guns,

their MAGA flags and clubs on the run

to the Capitol in open display,

or hidden in darkness as they prey

on election officials, prosecutors, judges, and jurors.

threatening all opposition to his criminal furor.

By all means send your political donations

to the RNC which pledges to destroy our nation.

And put another Putin in place here at home

where the deer and the antelope roam

across a country where freedom once ruled.

Stolen elections by a cowardly fool

is a disgrace to America, land of the free and the brave

overrun by fools giving the OK to rule by the depraved.

Navalny, we stand by your grave with great respect and pray

that we can find the courage you displayed, every single day.

UNDERSTATED

Photo by cottonbro studio on Pexels.com

There is so little that is understated now.

No more elegant lifting of a single brow.

Excited stammers and caustic frowns

by the faithless Republican clowns

who mimic a man who would wear a crown.

There is no thoughtful, errudite display.

There is only posing false, and evil, play.

Trumped up hearings day-by-day

now hold sway hiding reality away.

He does not lead; but, is just a toy

they use as an effective ploy

to take away power from the many

so they can hold on to every penny

they have gained by writing rules

to benefit themselves and other fools

who overlook their history

and their sworn oaths and holy duty.

What games are played out every day.

While we are left to hope and pray.

And legislation is torn to shreds

that protected us lying in our beds

believing we could face another day,

and see more laws added to hold harm at bay.

They play on fears which they create,

their greed for money and power to satiate.

Vote before it is too late

and democracy is no longer ours to celebrate.

VOTE

We were assigned to write an essay on the theme

preserving democracy for the American Legion or VFW

contest. I forget which group sponsored the contest, it seems.

I recall the solemn moment I realized the cost of loss of democracy

as I pondered the yet-to-be-written script of how it could be done.

Democracy could be lost and its greatest strength laid askew

across our inattentive road to future growth and glory,

an old and Founding-of-America story.

As if !

As if !

I scoffed at myself as I looked around and listened to

the soldiers, sailors and airmen recently returned from WWII.

Those who fought against fascism and for democracy over there

would never permit freedom’s loss here. They would not !

And yet !

And yet !

I could clearly see all around me the powerful need

of individuals cowered by fear of others’ success.

“Keeping up with the Joneses” had become a litany,

a passion, a way of life, that had become de rigeur.

The challenge of battles now laid aside no longer sustained the pride.

Competing to win became a holy grail.

Leagues formed for bowlers and ballers;

their boys played Little League as parents hollered.

Trophies filled up cases with virtuous wins.

Still, this was not enough to satisfy anyone.

I heard the call and response to the world all around me,

“At least I am free, white and twenty-one.”

What ?

What ?

Free, I understood. That is what America stands for, right ?

But, white ? How is that a right and why does it matter ?

Where was that coming from? Where was that fight ?

On the movie screen with John Wayne and his troops

who pushed Native people aside and onto reservations

to avoid annihilation, hiding American’s need to claim

a false superiority, to be better than someone, anyone.

For if we are all equal, none of us can be better than another.

On the television screen we  saw burning crosses held aloft

by robed and hooded Southerners hiding their sense of inferiority.

In the North the inferiority hid secretly, under false pride

that claimed no true victory over the South’s perfidy

when it refused to stay within the nation, and hurt our surety

that our Union of States could survive as equal and free

despite the legacy of enslaving people who should be free.

Viet-Nam was aflame, bombed and napalmed in our name.

Those old enough to fight and die were too young

to buy a drink or vote. Most not yet twenty-one.

Ah, I see.

Ah, I see.

And so I did not write an essay; but, a play.

Two characters with Iron Curtain names to delay

the defensive need to deny the truth I would display.

A young nephew visited his uncle in jail,

conversing through the bars of his cell,

trying to understand how it came to be his uncle

was not, and never would be, free.

The 1st. Amendment had become distorted by media,

by political ads and an opposition party

who eschewed the growing power of those formerly subdued

to salve white supremacy, and simple jealousy.

The 2d. Amendment had become distorted by the NRA and KKK;

armed to the teeth they would say is the only way

to keep America white and free as it was meant to be.

“Be careful, young nephew,” his uncle warned.

There are those who would do you harm to silence you.

“Elections no longer count, when the count is misconstrued.”

Only in the final moment, of the final scene, we knew

freedom had been lost in the USA at some time hence.

Freedom is only as strong as me and you, equals

not better than one another, Americans all.

Vote now before America falls.

It took over 60 years to see the words I put on the page

that long ago day, become reality.

The wars fought long ago never ended.

Because human beings always need to know

they are enough, though never better than another, though flawed.

They are treasured and loved more than money and profit.

America need not fall; but, you must vote for those

who recognize who you are and what you could become.

For those who see the possibility of a future

where all men, women and children are the true treasure

of a nation where all are free to engage in democracy.

Vote now. Not for the past; but, for a future that can last.
