DECONSTRUCTION

Columbus, Ohio 10-18-2025

The streets were lined for blocks on end.

Signs reminded all who rejoiced to attend

Why they walked and talked and smiled and waved

At passing cars who braved delays

While drivers honked horns and shouted out

“Vote him out and make it a rout!”

Costumed critters danced to our delight

Knowing their freedom would give him a fright.

Deconstruct the lies we have been told.

Deconstruct the narrative being sold.

Deconstruct the bullie’s hold.

Deconstruct institutional mold.

Gather in peace the young and the old.

Stronger are you, more wise, more bold.

Deconstruct so we can rebuild

What he has destroyed with his minions’ lack of skill.

We know how to do this, and more.

We have done it many times before.

My thanks to my friends in Clintonville area of Columbus who helped me attend this moment of patriots’ challenge to the con men robbing the USA of its power, wealth, ideals and humanity. The lack of media coverage was appalling. The misrepresentation of attendance numbers cannot be challenged when media fails to provide images of the gatherings. A local station covered it AFTER it was over and crowds had dispersed. Another stated hundreds attended when it was actually thousands. We are here. We are resisting. We are going nowhere until the despotism and kidnapping of people and the Supreme Court, universities, news organizations, social media outlets, medical and public health Institutions… even our very language and the meaning of words and phrases has been brought to an end and freedom restored.

We shall not be silenced.

STROBOSCOPIC POLITICAL STRATEGY

Imagine if you will,

everything you see in the MAGA

movement is really still.

Moments framed in space and time

and speeded up at will.

Whose will matters; yours or mine?

Wagons moving forward

we are told but their wheels appear

to travel in reverse.

This wagon wheel illusion

is not just made for movies.

It is made to sow confusion.

The brain’s refresh rate is slower

than the information it is seeing.

It believes it is seeing motion

when the still image is moving more rapidly

than the brain can refresh.

Unmerged refresh rates upend believability.

Under certain lighting conditions

and with other distractions

this effect is more striking

and not to the brain’s liking.

The distracting stroboscopic effect

is not truly an illusion, but a warning.

Our brains try to make sense of the lie

right before our eyes.

Sampling any phenomenon

with the wrong frequency

leads to misinterpretation.

The frame moves faster and faster

and slower brain rates sense a disaster.

Film. Repeat. Film in bright light

to move people to the Right.

Offer more distraction

and the lies seem so real

that we put them on media’s reels

so we think were are moving

forward; but, our country

is moving backward.

We must understand projection

for our own and our country’s protection.

We are seeing under the illusion of confusion.

A political strategy for those untrained

to give this phenomena a name.

Now you know it.

Now you own it.

Now do something about it.

SMALL SPACES SMALL MINDS

AI GENERATED image of Elon Musk, Tim Cook, Mark Zuckerberg

The smaller the space in the head

or in geography, or in any cartography,

The less room for challenges and new ideas.

Facts have only so much space.

They must cling fast to last.

Those who limit themselves

to live inside bubbles

seldom recognize such troubles.

They are sure of everything

and wrong about nothing.

They have organized their small space

impeccably, intelligently, flawlessly.

So they must be as well.

They have neither time nor space to dwell

upon possible fallacy.

Only those outside the bubble can see

the absolute dangers of such insanity.

It is a new kind of mental illness

born in the stillness of active minds

revolving unchallenged by facts

that would make their theories unwind.

No such persons should be given power

over those who would see freedom flower

with a just and truthful effort, hour upon hour.

Those who live in openly-wide spaces,

who are woke to every possibility,

to every person and new discovery

are shut down and shut out

until autocracy has destroyed democracy.

STORMY NIGHT

Photo by Tim Mossholder on Pexels.com

STORMY NIGHT

Scattered rain was predicted.

The evening news meteorologist

calmly warned of light rain.

Instead, a wild storm came

filling the night with thunder

and meaningless blunder

as lightening broke asunder

a peaceful, if not restful, sleep.

Too wild a storm to venture out in.

A storm to set us back and shut blinds

to keep from seeing or fearing ruin.

This storm rapidly blew in

while most of us slept.

At sunrise, when I rose, I looked outside,

finally, and see the truth.

It is not what I was told, nor surmised.

The yard is battered.

its inhabitants scattered in burrows;

the garden littered and furrowed

by limbs  dragged and cuffed.

The flag hangs upside down

until it touches the ground

in sacrilege and shame.

The flag holder has been pulled loose,

its screws unscrewed, its anchor

pulled apart and left hanging in dark space

through a night of constant turmoil,

leaving my flag drenched and soiled.

In morning light I could finally see

the upending of  democracy,

right on my front porch

where everyone could if they would

easily see. No neighbor reported

nor interceded to fix a flag so distorted.

But, false solar lights alone

across the yard ways shone,

too low-light to assess

a flag under duress.

In morning light, in my nightgown I alight

to pull my flag up and close.

I place it upright to stand tall,

allowing the tears soaking it to fall,

that it may slowly dry out with the sky;

held by a newly installed holder,

one stronger and bolder.

I promise you this: the flag, my flag,

will soon again fly safe and free.

As will all of our beloved country.

1981-2025

In 1981 I was a Managing Attorney of the Senior Citizen Unit at The Legal Aid Society in Columbus, Ohio. Our ability to represent our clients was severely curtailed by President Reagan’s cut-off of funds to the Legal Service Corporation which distributed funds to agencies serving the legal needs of the poor, disabled and senior citizens through grants. Suddenly, we learned we could no longer be paid. Many left the agency. I remained, the sole attorney left to handle over 300 open cases. His reason? He disliked that our agencies sued the county, state and federal governments when benefits were illegally denied.

I found a part-time job at a toy store 5 nights a week and on Saturday and Sunday to pay my school loan. I became a live-in manager at two rooming houses for women students at The Ohio State University to provide a roof over my head. I took over the yard work and minor maintenance( I taught myself to tile the shower, repair locks and lay carpet)and installed soda machines in the basement to pay for transportation, phone service and medical care. My clients fared far worse.

Reagan laid off 2,840 workers, eliminated or reduced benefits to the poor. He also terminated every recipient of Social Security and SSI payments based on disability, requiring each person to reapply for benefits. He claimed massive fraud when the actual fraud rate for food stamps, for example, was one-tenth of 1 percent. This is the same time frame when a huge Savings and Loan fraud scandal decimated clients of Savings and Loans and saw bankers imprisoned for fraud.

Three of my clients died as a direct result of losing benefits. I was able file suit to get benefits restored. However, legal justice is a slow process. Court cases take time. Especially when hundreds thousands of cases increase docket constraints. Especially, when the attorneys who would represent persons with zero incomes also lost their jobs.

It was a brilliant strategy to reduce expenses so wealthy citizens and corporations could see a decrease in taxes. The public relations campaign his administration promoted claimed taxes were too high, public benefits too costly, and “those people” too lazy to work. He also claimed a Nuer to be illustrated massive fraud.

It is difficult to survive such programmatic loss of income, housing, food and healthcare. But, particularly horrendous for those disabled and unable to work, or those aged and too exhausted and ill to work. This were the clients I watched suffer and die. There were many more I did not know. Many more who suffered or died across the country. Yes, it was temporary. How quickly would die living on the street? Hungry and without sufficient food? Unable to buy your insulin or blood pressure medication? Would you even seek medical care?

We are watching a much more massive attack on our fellow citizens and the institutions in place to meet all of our needs. Those discussing the anti-fraud hunt by private citizen Elon Musk mistakenly buy into the story. Let me give you a few reasons why the stories you are hearing about fraud are meaningless.

If a person on Social Security does not survive the full month, the benefit they received at the start of their month becomes an overpayment. It then must be paid back to the SSA. If you have ever settled an estate you know it takes months, if not years, to settle the decedent’s death. In fact, it may be there is no survivor to even notify creditors, including SSA, that the person has died.

For example, my own mother died of cancer. She died on the 27th. Of February. As a result, the Social Security check she had received and used became an overpayment. If she had died on the 28th. She would have remained entitled to the check. How many of those the media says appear as overpayments are truly simple accounting practices in motion, some slower than others. Even when the overpayments are cleared and checks no longer mailed out or deposited because the recipient’s mail is returned or bank account is closed, there may have been no death notice to SSA so the person issued a SS card remains on the books even though they are no longer receiving benefits. What we are hearing on the news is an over simplistic analysis of complex situations handled by our pubic servants, civil service workers who know how to work their way through a system that covers every single person ever issued a SS card. Can you even balance your check book?

A second example illustrating the tendency to use propaganda rather than complex analysis delivering the “news”. As a law student I worked for IRS during tax season. I was one of thousands of temporary workers needed across the country to first help, print, count, package and ship tax forms. As the date arrived for returns to be filed, I shifted to a temporary location to review and approve returns, checking for errors and calculation for payments due or the issuance of refunds for individual taxpayers. Others were hired to audit the returns. And others handled more complex corporate returns. Inspectors reviewed our work on a daily basis. We were sworn to secrecy and not permitted to discuss or disclose any information on the forms we reviewed, even among ourselves.

Since that time the work forces at SSA and IRS have been greatly reduced. They are now being decimated. Who will guard our information? Who will assure the data describing our earnings and payments will be accurate and forthcoming? The Inspectors General have been fired. The leadership is being removed because they know they are required by law to hold the information in total confidentiality, and resist the prying eyes of non-employees demanding access for no stated purpose based on fact or substantiated cause. In trying to protect us and follow the law they are losing their jobs.

This is not business as usual. This is a continuation of attempts to hamstring care for our citizenry in order to benefit a few which began with a President Reagan and has been on-going for 40 years. Propaganda works. The attacks on, and underfunding of, public education over these 40 years has made it easier to believe propaganda. The attacks on labor unions and decrease in actual wages has left less time for self-education, civic involvement, and attention to detail in families now needing 2-4 jobs to keep a roof over their heads.

Do not listen to what is being said to you. Watch what is being done to you: increasing unemployment, un-regulated union-busting which decreases wages, more people losing housing, going hungry, unable to access health care… more suffering…more death. All for no good purpose. Actually, for no purpose whatever; other than to enrich the few at the expense of the many. Is this what you voted for?

HUMANITY OR INSANITY?

Without humanity

there is only insanity.

Children kill themselves and one another,

forgetting we are all sister and brother,

with guns and weapons of war

until no one feels safe anymore.

When humanity is not in play

the other becomes easy prey,

to satisfy weak ego’s need

for power to feed their greed.

Self-loathing hides behind the cloud

stirred up as sycophants run, wowed

by the big man’s stolen wealth and fame,

in an endless hateful, meaningless game.

Without humanity

there is only insanity.

PARTING WAYS

Duty.

Honor.

Country.

Fear.

Cowardice.

Submission.

The first three I claim

The last three I disdain.

No more need be said.

A national honor now dead.

Killed by those who fled

their duty to country,

a brilliant democracy.

I cannot shake the hand

of one unwilling to stand

by my side and claim

a nation fighting shame.

Pretense has no place

in a nation ruled by truth and grace.

Ignorance is no excuse for surprise

by those who choose to close their eyes

to crimes and fraud and hate

until it becomes too late

to grasp and seize and save

Duty,

Honor,

Country.

Parting ways.

DARKER DAYS

Photo by David Bartus on Pexels.com

I no longer wait through the night for sun to rise.

Darkness diverts stray thoughts and lets my mind play.

Flowers have taught me to wave away sunny days

whose glare overcomes the true color of all it covers.

Flowers’ colors are brighter on cloudy days

when sun’s harshest, boldest gaze

is tempered by drifting clouds and shade.

The sun arouses, but not always in positive ways.

Passion and love arouse in darkness, under cover,

preparing us to live together on sun-filled days

which can overheat our passion with a challenging gaze,

and guns drawn out in furious blaze.

Night brings safety after those last shots are fired

into the night to hold it at bay, for those who tire

of being alone, hopeless and afraid; whose souls require

less sun to stimulate their hate and more cool nights

to bed down and draw covers over their endless fright.

I welcome the night which offers respite and insight.

I welcome dreams which bring truth and understanding alight.

If only we could recall our dreams in daylight,

perhaps we could create world where justice and mercy prevails

and all are treated right.

On the the hotter, brighter days ahead I fear we may fail,

holding on to what we cannot truly see in such bright daylight.

In such over-heated light true color is lost to our sight

distorting our view of all that is true.

Shoving microphones and spotlights on our frailty

too often distorts our reality

until we no longer can recall the truths learned on darkest days.

I no longer wish the darkness of night away.

I see all more clearly in the muted light of night

than ever I can see in brightest daylight.

I no longer wait through the night for sun to rise.

Darker days are here to no one’s surprise.

They may bring the only way we can survive.
