LIGHT UP

Photo by William Melvin, April 2025

I am made of stardust

lit by sunlight.

Like lilies of the field

I dig deep into earth

with my toes.

Like birds of the air

I soar on currents stirred

when heat meets cold.

I seek. I soar. I laugh out loud.

I raise my face to the sun.

I dance in moonlight.

My spirit takes flight.

I grow strong.

My beauty abounds.

As earth, my earth

turns round and round.

Time has no meaning

I have found

except to tether my hopes

that change comes around

when most desired,

bright with sounds

of laughter, and courage

unleashed and unbound.

Rejoice in the day,

the month and the year

but stay in the moment.

Have no fear.

D.E.I. and I

Photo by Nicholas Swatz on Pexels.com

I have stayed away from words,

breathless, in my grief,

for too long.

Diversity is my faith.

Equity is my hope.

Inclusion is my love.

Each breath I take is a promise

that things will be better someday.

And, they have been for a time,

in places expanding across space,

across multiple divides.

In a school, then university.

In a church, then a community.

Across a state, on national forums

Each breath inhaled the hate,

expanded and expelled love in its place.

Breaths took down barriers, created programs,

enacted policies, changed syllabi,

created courses and news ways of seeing,

new avenues of progress, new ways of being.

The backlash always came,

in drips and drabs, all the same.

But this! This! It is a fearsome game.

It is not D.E.I. which they decry.

They want to see us hold our breath

and die.

They SNAP food from the mouths of babes.

They ask the aged and disabled to work their own miracles,

heal themselves without medic-aid,

waste away, and die.

They place tariffs on those who stood at our side.

Making us all pay more for less to save their pride.

They fill their pockets with our labor,

changing coins to crypto for their greedy favor.

They extort heroes who fight to protect freedom world-wide

so that dictators and killers can be by their side.

They miss the days when the few controlled the many.

They refuse to compete, or share even one penny;

pennies earned from our labor, not theirs.

Lately, it seems we have not got a prayer.

We seldom did. But, do not despair.

What we did have was the freedom to try.

Now, our hard-won freedom to speak and act is denied.

We are being denied the right to even try.

We still have one another, and our God-given rights.

We will never allow those to be shoved aside.

And at the end of this life we shall hold hands and sigh

We tried.

We tried.

We tried!

GRIFTERS UNITE

A nation of grifters.

That now seems right.

And the right has taken

grifting to a new level,

right in our sight.

Trump bibles, watches and hats

to grift cash for legal defense.

Elon Musk funds the cache

with his own which once

was our own, using what our

tax dollars created as his own.

Grifters come in all moneyed sizes.

But, the fine print on their offers

is too small to easily read,

hiding their grifting and greed.

Starlink for free to victims

of hurricanes Milton and Helene.

Except it is not free.

And if Musk and Trump succeed.

None of us will be free.

After one month, we will owe

Musk three-hundred forty-nine plus

dollars and service fees.

Backlash forced him to extend

the grift until the end

of the year 2024.

when victims will be left

holding the bag and more.

And so grifters appear to be

enlightened and generous and we

their sycophantic beneficiaries,

until it is too late

to shut the fascist gate

being constructed right under our nose.

Grifting away democracy is not new.

It has happened to others before,

but now, for us, it is way too close.

The grifters have united

and now so must we.

Vote!

The Passion of Old Age

Photo by Anastasia Shuraeva on Pexels.com

I carry the buckets heavy with ash

from the spot where love burned

long in the past.

Charred earth remains.

Charred hopes dashed.

Passion so bright it lit up the night.

Only ash remains in dawn’s cold light.

Ash is good for the soul.

It reminds us what we all know

in the darkest recesses

where we seldom go.

We are dust.

and return to dust we must.

Thus, I carry buckets, yours and mine,

with ashes from a brighter time

where light was stronger,

where we could see better.

When we were stronger,

and we were better.

I remember the sparks

that lit love sublime

as I empty the buckets

and spread a dust so fine.

It covers the garden bed

where our roses now climb.

Each rose is a kiss

recalled from the time

when your touch started a fire

and your lips on mine

offered a taste of the Divine.

And love, warm love,

continues to grow.

Its fire now banked

in a steady, warm glow.

THE LUCKIEST PERSON ALIVE

Photo by Andrea Piacquadio on Pexels.com

Luck is likely geography

the geometry

of prime position,

being, simply being,

in the right place

at the right time.

Who decides

the time and place

you occupy?

We all know

parents try.

Rules create boundaries

to block the egress

from places

you would fly.

Custom dictates

and you comply.

Ask yourself

the reason why.

Find your position.

claim your space.

Make your own luck

in life’s race;

In prime position

to allow you to hold on

with a smiling disposition,

and to truly become

the luckiest person alive.

DREAMS OF STATE

Waking in the half-state

within the space where worlds collide

with no need to run away and hide,

where languages merge to help us realize

our old reality has solemnly died,

we are born anew and lifted high

above the horizon and into the sky

in the arms of the ripening sun

where all new life begins.

Every single day, we turn

in the arms of stars to find our way.

How wild this earth-turn

ride around the sun

across our galaxy spiraling wide

into a universe where silent winds blow.

Where we shall land we do not know.

On mornings like this we do not care.

We are content to fly on currents of air,

floating across places yet to be seen,

across new horizons and new sunrises

to worlds we have never been.

We find new courage to open our wings

and finally let our true hearts sing

in praise of the morning sky’s rising

after the night’s long-dreaming sights

to find ourselves newly alive.

We shout with joy, “What a ride!”

HAPPY BIRTHDAY,IMMORTALITY

Photo by Marina Utrabo on Pexels.com

This day is the last day

that I am able to say

I am seventy-four.

My aching body feels the score.

I have pushed constantly my rock uphill.

Now, it pauses at the top, momentarily still.

I halt to feel the weight of years gone by,

the laughter and tears, the chuckles and sighs.

I am ready to cross the great divide

and slide downhill as my youth subsides.

It is downhill where I shall find

my fastest speed of all my time.

The wind feels stronger,

helping my journey, afraid no longer

of what awaits at the end,

or even, just around the bend.

The scenery blurs on the way,

replaced by memories of every past day.

Memories are more sure to my eye

then all that staccato-like flies by.

When I finally reach bottom

I can let the rock roll away, forgotten.

Finally, I can spend my days at play

take off my shoes, grinning teeth on display

and smiling with unbridled joy at the past

sigh to the heavens, “At last! At last!”

SUNRISE

The sky alights as do I.

Sun fills the fibers from head to toe.

Sun awakens so I must go.

I must go follow the sun it seems

or languish within startling dreams.

I prefer reality to map my way out of night.

I prefer a mind and heart filled with light.

Shadows always fall behind me.

Darkness  no longer blinds me

though I am on unfamiliar paths

and the light will not last.

For a few hours, at least,

I progress past the breach

where it would be easy to fall

onto hopes covered by a pall.

Light guides my way

for another day.

It no longer matters if I know

exactly where I am meant to go.

I simply take delight

that it is not yet night.

This, then, is the destination

for each soul and every nation.

Be in the here. Be in the now.

Let this be our solemn vow.

As difficult as it is to follow the sun,

humanity’s journey has just begun.

There will always be another night.

Sunrise always returns to give us light.

HALLOWEEN

Photo by Charles Parker on Pexels.com

I want some tombstones,

though not my own;

the fake ones which fool

little ghosts, faeries, and ghouls

who ply their trade at my front door,

calling “trick or treat” and more,

as I did so on long ago nights.

I still recall the creepy frights

from neighborhood kids who screamed

and jumped out of dark corners with eyes that gleamed,

laughing with glee at my horrified screech and shout.

That is what Halloween was all about.

Halloween used to be the time when death’s screen

was removed from our young eyes

and we could discover with fearsome surprise

that none of us would ever

live forever.

I want some tombstones in my yard

to remind little beggars from near and far

that life is short and is to be treasured

beyond any sweetness candy can measure.
