HELPERS

Caring need not mean

carrying another’s burden;

nor lifting a load too heavy

to bear alone,

yet often does.

There is a danger of injury

in shifting loads.

Better to brace

weakened strength

and leave the load in place.

Better to widen the stance

on planted feet

solidly grounded

while arms embrace.

Better to dance together.

this, too, lightens a load

with far more grace

and less harm.

THE CHRISTMAS TREE

Too bright a light

washes the image

from our sight,

and blurs the edges

as if night

hid the view

in plain sight.

Spotlights have their use.

Their brilliance overrides

the fear of missing

what disaster often hides:

Scenes of tortures

deep and wide

meant to remain hidden.

“Smaller is better”

says the mother of a short child,

in a tiny house, with a small income.

“Too big is too wild”

she states without guile;

“It is the tiny smile

which touches hearts”.

The twinkling stars

in the darkest sky

remind us how far

our souls have journeyed.

And the star atop the tree

joins those strings of lights

to brighten our way.

The Coward

I hide behind

the oligarchs

who hold

true power.

And, thus, I cower.

I hide behind

Their super PACs

where they hold

their true power.

And thus, I cower.

I hide behind

their media outlets

whose talent lies

In the glower of power.

And thus, I cower.

I hide behind

their channeled wealth

washed through the fortress

of my tower.

And thus, I cower.

Coward that I am.

Coward that I.

Coward that.

Coward.

The Lost Soul,by Louise Annarino,2-14-2014

The Lost Soul

There is no place of safety;

no where to run or hide.

I buried pride a long time ago

beneath the snow of cold hearts,

torn apart by fearful rhetoric

and unsung praise,

a dire malaise that yearns

for all it can learn

of love despite the risk

of loss. I would toss out

the loud mouth lout

who risks discovery of

my presence,and stay silent

if I could,but I cannot

stifle the scream of words

held in check lest they

terrify and distract

from the solution to

dark pollution of a soul.

Where is the Light?

Where is the Peace?

Where is the God

who created the innocence

now lost,perhaps forever?

War changes all.

Spring Is Near,by Louise Annarino,1-25-2014

Spring is Near,by Louise Annarino,January 25,2014

Spring will come

made more glorious

by the furious

blast of winter snow.

Grab hope by your fist

folded gently over fear.

Spring is near.

DAVE

DAVE

4-2-2013

Louise Annarino

Too often poems

fall out of my eyes

washed onto my cheeks

by tears of joy

or sorrow.

Joy to have known you

in shared sinew and bone

with a long history

carried in common DNA

and family name.

Sorrow at the loss

of a future of mutual

knowing,sharing,caring

for those whom we both

love……………always.

HUNGER, Louise Annarino

HUNGER

Louise Annarino

4-23-2013

I hunger

for bleu cheese and gazpacho

in a chilled glass

on a hot day

after mowing the lawn,

cutting tart scents

from dry sod,

inviting rain

to keep it green, and alive

like my love for you.

FRIENDS,Louise Annarino

FRIENDS

Louise Annarino

4-23-2013

We were never shipmates,

nor colleagues, nor neighbors,

not even partners in crime.

But, I know you

As I know my own palm;

its lines of health,destiny,and love

mapped in my flesh for all to see.

From the moment we clasped hands

our lives and lines intertwined

to complete the puzzled maze

I

thought

I

alone

could complete.

GAME OF PRETEND

THE GAME OF PRETEND

Louise Annarino

4-23-2013

Underpaid taxes

and overrun budgets

shutter rec-centers

factories

schools

hope

while dog parks flourish

with barks of pleasure

by pets at leisure

well fed,well groomed,well vetted,

paraded,protected pooches

while homeless children

follow unemployed parents

left behind middle class time

to unfamilar beds

at night,

up and out

at dawn

to make it through

one       more      day

without childhood play.

Thus, we pretend

our children are okay.

“Whoof”!

Time to feed the dog.

DRIVING NAILS, Louise Annarino

Driving Nails

Louise Annarino

4-23-2013

Voices heard in the distance,

words scattered by cold winds

and the grunting song of tires

on pavement.

Voices not angry but shriveled,

but nevertheless shouted

into the wind,

against the traffic

passing beneath the roof

on which they stand,

tools in hand,

ordering edges and driving nails

into soft shingles.

Better to remain

silent

amidst such violence.
